Gondolas get stuck in a traffic jam on the narrow canals of Venice in July 2012. Mark Twain wrote of his travels through northern Italy in his 1869 novel “The Innocents Abroad,” his classic “record of a pleasure trip.” It took him to the great sights of Europe and on to Constantinople and Jerusalem before he sailed home to New York.
