Odell A. Hakanson, 85, of Maddock, ND, died Sunday, December 16, 2007, at Maple Manor Care Center in Langdon, ND. He was born October 26, 1922, on the Olaf Hakanson farm near Maddock, ND, to Arwin and Eleanor (Strand) Hakanson. He attended schools in Heimdal and Arne Township, high school for a year at Hesper, ND, graduating from the Benson County Agricultural and Training School at Maddock in 1941 and also attended the ND Agricultural College in Fargo. He then went to Bremerton, WA and worked at the US Naval Shipyard as a journeyman welder and later as a certified pipe welder. Odell enlisted in the Navy in 1944 and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was discharged in April of 1946. Odell married Lorraine Risovi on August 15, 1948, at Harvey, ND. The couple lived and farmed on his parent’s farm in Arne Township near Heimdal, ND. In September of 1971, while still farming, Odell began working for the city of Maddock. They moved to Maddock in 1975. Following retirement from the city in May of 1988, the couple enjoyed traveling, visiting their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Odell was a lifelong member of Klara Lutheran Church, rural Heimdal. He was confirmed there in October of 1936, served on the church board and was cemetery sexton for many years. Odell was a member and past president of the Maddock Church Parish Board. He served as Arne Township Supervisor for number of years, was a member of the Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post #123; Veterans of Foreign Wars; charter member and past chairman of the ALL, member of the Maddock Fire Department, Maddock Ambulance Service and the Elks. Odell served on a number of boards including: the Maddock Memorial Home, Maddock Cable TV, Maddock Economic Development, Legion Club, Maddock Wild Life Club, first Maddock Community Center Board and currently was a member of the Moeller Home Apartments Board.

Odell is survived by his wife: Lorraine of Maddock; children: Ansel (Peggy) Hakanson of Fargo, Dean (Connie) Hakanson of Langdon, ND and Sherry Hakanson Moore of Steamboat Springs CO; 5 grandchildren: Kevin (Stacy) Hakanson, Kristin (Steve) Spickenreuther, Travis (Megan) Hakanson, Bailey Moore and Brian Moore and 3 great-grandchildren: Emma and Audra Hakanson and Christian Spickenreuther. He was preceded in death by his parents.

Funeral services: Thursday, December 20th, 2007, 11:00 AM at North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock, ND.

Burial: Klara Lutheran Cemetery, rural Heimdal, ND.

Military Rites: Theodore A. Togstad American Legion Post 123 of Maddock.

Visitation: Wednesday from 4 to 8:30pm with an 8:30 pm Prayer Service at the Nelson Funeral Home in Maddock.

Memorials may be given to the charity of your choice or to the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery at Mandan.
