Philip Nagel, 81, Horace, ND, died on Wednesday, Sept. 25, 2002, at Innovis Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Mr. Nagel was born on Oct. 16, 1920 in Raleigh, ND, to Gabriel and Marian (Erker) Nagel. He grew up and attended country school near Raleigh. He worked on the family farm. He married Dorothy Kopp on June 22, 1943, at St. Gertrude's Catholic Church in Raleigh. Philip entered the US Navy in 1943 and served in the South Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged on Dec. 26, 1945. Upon his discharge, they made their home near Lemmon, SD, where they farmed. They moved to Jamestown, ND, where they farmed. In 1963 they moved to Mapleton, ND. In 1992 he retired and they moved to Horace.
He was a lifetime member of the West Fargo VFW and longtime member at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Philip is survived by his wife, Dorothy; five children, Merlin (June) Nagel of San Diego, CA, Patricia (Don) Lehman of Austin, TX, Alvin Nagel of Horace, Rogene (Kenneth) Veil of Jamestown, and Roxanne (Charles) Pett of St. Paul, MN; 11 grandchildren, 9 great grandchildren; five brothers, Richard (Sherri) of Denver, CO, Pete of Everett, WA, Max (Carol) of Colgate, WI, Eddy (Ruth) of Waterford, WI, and Russ (Donna) of Colgate; two sisters, Elly Reis of Sacramento, CA, and Mary (Richard) Henschel of El Dorado, CA; two aunts, Teresa (Mike) Miller of Raleigh, and Alice (Ed) Ballou of Half Moon Bay, CA; and uncle, Isadore of Raleigh.
He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, John, Dayo and Jack.
Phil enjoyed his farming and planting zinnias in his garden to watch them grow.
Visitation: Monday, Sept. 30, 2002, from 5 to 7 PM, with a vigil service at 7 PM, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, West Fargo, and one hour before the service.
Funeral Mass: Tuesday at 10:30 AM at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
Burial: ND Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.
