Aldrich “Al” C. Bloomquist, 91, of Moorhead, MN died Monday, August 6, 2012 in Eventide Lutheran Home, Moorhead, MN.
Al was born on March 20, 1921 in Willmar, MN to Aldrich Albin Carl and Leola Hannah (France) Bloomquist. He was confirmed in Bethel Lutheran Church in Willmar. As a boy he became an Eagle Scout and began his lifelong hobby of collecting stamps.
Al’s attendance at Gustavus Adolphus College was interrupted by his service in the United States Navy in World War II. He returned to graduate in 1946.
Al worked for the St. James and Mankato, MN newspapers. He also worked for Jostens and Western Beet Sugar Producers. Beginning in 1961 and continuing for the next thirty years, he worked for the Red River Valley Sugarbeet Growers and American Crystal Sugar Company. He was considered a leading expert on the United States sugar industry. Al originated the publication of the Sugar Beet Growers magazine.
Al is survived by his wife of 68 years, Meredith; brother-in-law, Donald (June) Scheid; nieces and nephews, Timothy (Sandra) Bloomquist, Marcia (Bob) Olson, Betsy (Greg) Lundgren, Steve (Mavis) Scheid, Gwen Mielke, Merre Kivlin and Jennifer (Matthew) Rauscher.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brother and sister-in-law, Ross and Lavinia Bloomquist, and niece, Katherine Sakal.
Memorial Service: Thursday, August 16, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. in Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, MN.
