Jackie E. (Jack) Johnson

The memorial service for Jackie (Jack) E. Johnson will be Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the First Lutheran Church, Fargo, North Dakota. Visitation will be held Friday from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 PM at the First Lutheran Church Chapel. Burial will be at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan, ND.

Jack was born October 1, 1932 in Clement Township, Dickey County, North Dakota, the son of Emory and Selma (Uhlhorn) Johnson. He grew up on the farm, attended a one room rural school for his first eight years of education and graduated from Oakes, North Dakota High School in 1950.

Jack was born October 1, 1932 in Clement Township, Dickey County, North Dakota, the son of Emory and Selma (Uhlhorn) Johnson. He grew up on the farm, attended a one room rural school for his first eight years of education and graduated from Oakes, North Dakota High School in 1950.

He enlisted in the United States Air Force November 30, 1950 and served as a tail gunner on a B-29 Bomber, including a combat tour in Korea where he was awarded the Air Metal. He was honorably discharged on December 24, 1953.

Jack married Betty Jane Schmitz at the First Presbyterian Church at Oakes, North Dakota on May 21, 1954.

He attended Ellendale N & I College for one year, majoring in pre-engineering. He transferred to North Dakota State Agricultural College, earning a Bachelor of Science Degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1959.

Jack’s engineering career was almost exclusively related to the heavy equipment manufacturing industry, including several years with General Motors, the Melroe Company (now Bobcat Company), Steiger Tractor, Inc. (now Case IH), Consulting Engineering and ultimately teaching Engineering at North Dakota State University. He also served on numerous private, public, church and trade association Board of Directors.

Jack was the recipient of several awards, however being named NDSU College of Engineering Distinguished Alumni in 2007 meant more to him than any other award because "there can be no higher honor than being recognized by your colleagues." Jack was a member of First Lutheran Church and the American Legion.

Jack died Monday, December 3, 2012 at the North Dakota Veterans Administration Hospital, Fargo, ND. He was 80 years old.

Jack is survived by his wife Betty, Fargo, ND, two daughters; Rebecca Deitch, Fargo, ND and Kathy (Tim) Davis, Castle Rock, CO, one son; Jeffrey (DeLee) Johnson, Loveland, CO; four grandchildren, Michael, Mollie, Jack Tyler and MarLee; one great-granddaughter, Abby; three sisters, Ann Konkler, Lisbon, ND; Florence Dahlstrom, Wishek, ND and Sylvia (Bill) Greenwood, Sandpoint, ID.
