Donald Kenneth Paulson was born on May 14, 1929 in Fosston, the son of Peter S. and Anna Thorp Paulson. He grew up on the family farm in Heier Township and attended the Steinbrenner School. He was baptized and confirmed at Kingo Lutheran Church in Fosston. He worked for Kolstad Ranch in Montana and entered the US Army on January 25, 1952. Don proudly served his country in the Korean War and was honorably discharged in October 1953.

Don was married to Vivian Brenna and to this union two children were born, Peggy and Keith.

During his working career, Don was a finish blade operator and worked for numerous construction companies, retiring at the age of 74. He took great pride in his work and was sought by many contractors. He was the first blade operator to lay foam asphalt and was featured in a national publication for doing so. Don also enjoyed country music, and played in The Country Troubadours band for many years.

On April 23, 1977 Don was married to Joyce Bratvold in Moorhead and welcomed her daughters Renae and Randi. Joyce passed away on October 15, 2006 and Don continued to live in Moorhead until March 2012, moving to Fosston.

His favorite pastimes included hunting and fishing with his family and friends and loved playing pinochle with his children and grandchildren. He was a good carpenter and mechanic, and enjoyed doing projects for his family. Don always had a wonderful sense of humor and a good joke to tell - even when his health was failing.

He was a member of the West Fargo VFW, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 49, and Lutheran Church of the Good Shepherd in Moorhead.

He is survived by his son Keith (Lisa) Paulson of Gully, daughters, Peggy (Milo)Ystenes of Winger, Renae (Steve) May of Becida, Randi (Henry) Jangula of Williston, ND; grandsons Daniel (Elizabeth), Ben (Juliette), and Cory (Gina) Ystenes; Tyler and Logan Jangula; Jared (Kirsten) May; granddaughters Lindsey (Chris) Dougherty; Rheanda Jangula and Ashley May; great-grandchildren Olivia, Julian and Layne Ystenes, Braeden and Miley Dougherty and Peyton May.
