Howard Nelson, 95, Fargo, ND died on Monday, Dec. 24, 2012 at Bethany on 42nd, Fargo.Howard Valentine Nelson was born on Feb. 14, 1917 on the family farm near Mapleton, ND to Otis and Martha (Von Englen) Nelson. He grew up on the farm and attended school in Mapleton. Upon graduation, he started farming with his father. Howard married Georgine Lydia Jahnke on June 1, 1938 in Sisseton, SD. They farmed in the Casselton, ND area before moving into Casselton in 1986. For several years, they spent winters in California.

Howard Valentine Nelson was born on Feb. 14, 1917 on the family farm near Mapleton, ND to Otis and Martha (Von Englen) Nelson. He grew up on the farm and attended school in Mapleton. Upon graduation, he started farming with his father. Howard married Georgine Lydia Jahnke on June 1, 1938 in Sisseton, SD. They farmed in the Casselton, ND area before moving into Casselton in 1986. For several years, they spent winters in California.
Howard was a past member of the Masons, a 50 year member of El Zagel Shrine, and member of the Presbyterian Church in Mapleton and later in Casselton. He also served on the Mapleton School Board.
In his later years, Howard was known to travel the country side in his Buick checking the crops and visiting with “the boys.” He enjoyed watching the grandkids’ activities and spending weekends at the lake along with golfing and hunting.
He is survived by three children, Lynn, Casselton, Roger (Kathy), Amenia, ND and Loree (Merle) Jegtvig, Hawley, MN; 8 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; 4 great-great-granddaughters; and brother, Ralph (Barb), Casselton.
Howard was preceded in death by his wife, Georgine in 1998; 7 siblings, Muriel Marschke, Lawrence Nelson, Lucille Boyce, Lorraine Kapaun, Verna Hocking, Otis Nelson Jr., Kathryn Christian; and daughter-in-law, Nancy Nelson.
Funeral: Saturday, Dec. 29, 2012 at 10:30 AM at West Funeral Home, West Fargo with visitation one hour prior and reception to follow.
Burial: Casselton Cemetery.
