Paul R. Johnson, 82, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Monday, January 7, 2013 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, January 12 at 11AM in First Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes. Visitation will be held at the church one hour prior to services. The David-Donehower Funeral Home is serving the family.

Paul R. Johnson, 82, resident of Detroit Lakes, MN, died Monday, January 7, 2013 at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes.

Paul Raymond Johnson was born June 18, 1930 in Detroit Lakes, MN to Ole N. and Christina (Momb) Johnson. He was raised and educated in Detroit Lakes, graduating from Detroit Lakes High School in 1948. After high school, he enrolled at the Gail Institute in Minneapolis earning his certificate in telegraphy. In 1951, Paul enlisted with the United States Navy and proudly served his country aboard the USS Marshal during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged in 1955. Upon his return, Paul started working in Alexandria, MN for the Soo Line Railroad. On September 22, 1955, he was united in marriage to Jean Andresen. In 1960 they moved back to Detroit Lakes and Paul continued working for the Soo Line until 1977. Following his employment with the railroad, Paul kept busy with various jobs throughout the area. He worked in maintenance at the Highway Department and the Detroit Lakes High School, and drove school bus. After retiring for several years, Paul took a job as a “greeter” at Central Market. He enjoyed the interaction with people through conversation or a simple “hello”.

Paul’s love for family was ever present throughout his life; this attribute was part of the many pastimes he enjoyed. He loved to garden. Paul and Jean made a wonderful team growing every kind of vegetable and several different types of flowers. He was known for his beautiful morning glories and they were enjoyed by many. Paul also enjoyed fishing, refurbishing old furniture and wild ricing.

Paul is survived by his daughters: Randi (Keith) Marsh of Spokane, WA, Christi (Karl) Jorgenson of Detroit Lakes and Staci (Bernie) Foltz of West Fargo, ND. He is also survived by eight grandchildren: Karlee (Vincent) Bertuccio of Seattle, WA, Cody (Carrie) Jorgenson of Laurel, MT, Katelyn Jorgenson of Seattle, WA, Jordan (Jami) Marsh of Chattaroy, WA, Tanner Marsh of Missoula, MT, Adam (Erin) Foltz of Fargo, Carson Foltz of Fargo and Shelby Foltz of West Fargo, four great-grandchildren and two sisters: Gladys Johnson of Detroit Lakes and Lorna Braget of Detroit Lakes.

He is preceded in death by his parents, wife: Jean (2011), sisters: Olga Wilke and Ellen Olmstead and brothers: Jesse Johnson and George Johnson who died in infancy.
