As a young man, Henry entered the United States Army and served during WWII. Following an honorable discharge, he went to California with this brother to cut huge timbers in the mountains. On October 8, 1949 Henry was united in marriage to Bernice Reller at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Waubun. Henry began managing the Waubun Liquor Store in 1951 and continued until his retirement in 1984. During his retirement years, he would help area farmers during the fall harvest and also spent a lot of time cutting wood. Bernice and Henry have made their home together in the Waubun area since they were married.

Much of Henry's free time was spent in the outdoors or pulling pranks. To truly know Henry was to know his sense of humor and ability to get even the most unsuspecting person with one of his shenanigans. He also truly enjoyed fishing, hunting and telling stories.
