Dorothy "Dort" Ecklund, 76, Moorhead, MN, passed away Saturday, March 2, 2013, in Essentia Health, Fargo, ND, with her husband at her side.Dorothy Emeline Niehaus was born May 18, 1936, in New Vienna, Iowa, to Bernard and Martha (Freking) Niehaus. In 1941, the family moved to a farmstead just outside of Sauk Centre, MN, where Dort grew up and graduated from high school in 1953. On September 3, 1955, she married Eugene "Gene" Ecklund in Sauk Centre, and they made their home in Jamestown, ND. They moved to Moorhead in 1977.

Dorothy Emeline Niehaus was born May 18, 1936, in New Vienna, Iowa, to Bernard and Martha (Freking) Niehaus. In 1941, the family moved to a farmstead just outside of Sauk Centre, MN, where Dort grew up and graduated from high school in 1953. On September 3, 1955, she married Eugene "Gene" Ecklund in Sauk Centre, and they made their home in Jamestown, ND. They moved to Moorhead in 1977.
Dort was dedicated to her family and never missed recognizing a birthday or anniversary with cards and calls. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, golfing, playing cards, visiting with friends and taking pictures of family to capture that special moment. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Christian Mothers, and dedicated many hours to church ministries.
Dorothy is survived by her loving husband, Gene, Moorhead; children, Steven (Catherine) Ecklund, St. Anthony, MN, Kathleen (David) Rheault, Moorhead, Anne (Jim) Fiala, Grand Forks, ND, Mark (Susie) Ecklund, Glyndon, MN, James (Celeste) Ecklund, Coon Rapids, MN, Jean (Paul) Morlock, Moorhead, Denise (John) Silva, Albuquerque, NM, and Mary Beth Ecklund, Moorhead; 23 grandchildren; 9 great-grandchildren; sisters, Germaine Tharaldson, New Brighton, MN, and Margaret Gaebel Johnson (LeRoy), Alexandria, MN; father-in-law, Carl Ecklund, Sauk Centre; several brothers and sisters-in-law; and extended family.
She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Scott; and mother-in-law, Mary Ecklund.

Visitation: Friday, 4 PM to 7 PM with a prayer service at 7 PM, Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Funeral: Saturday, March 9, 2013, at 11 AM, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Moorhead. Interment in St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead.
