Daniel “Doc” Oien Sr., 89, of Binford, ND, died Thursday, March 14, 2013 surrounded by his family at Nelson County Health System-Care Center in McVille, ND.Daniel was born September 26, 1923 near Binford, ND to Fredrick and Olive (Gilbertson) Oien. He graduated from Binford Public School. He married Ione Leean on December 10, 1948 at the Bethany Church parsonage. Doc was a life long farmer. He also served on the Bethany Free Lutheran Church Board. Doc loved horses, cows and dogs. He sang for many funerals and weddings.

Daniel is survived by his daughters, Deanna (Gale) Melby of Winger, MN and Janice (Jeff) Johnson of Jamestown, ND; son, Daniel Jr. (Pat) Oien of Binford; 8 grandchildren, Eric Melby, Aaron (Stephanie) Melby, Mark (Melissa) Melby, Daniel Melby, Jason (Robyn) Ekern, Angela (Aaron) Berg, Tanya Oien and Stuart (Jordan Metcalfe) Oien; 13 great grandchildren, Jonathan, Nichole and Rebecca Melby, Ryan Melby, Wyatt Billings, Matthew, Micah and Myles Melby, Sierra and Trista Melby, and Hailey, Alexis and Jacob Berg; 2 sisters, Florence (Wallace) Thune and Glenna Mae Larson; sister-in-law, Margeane Oien; and many nieces and nephews.
Daniel was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Ione; brothers, George, Ernest, Frank, and Alvin; sisters, Belle Mullins and Ruth Thune; and an infant child.
The Funeral Service for Daniel will be Friday, March 22, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. in Bethany Free Lutheran Church, Binford, ND. Visitation will be Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 5 to 7 p.m. in the church. Spring interment will be in the Bethany Cemetery, rural Binford, ND.
