Loretta Erickson

Loretta Agnes Settelmeyer Erickson was born July 22, 1932 in New Rockford, North Dakota. She grew up as the youngest of eight children on a farm near New Rockford and graduated from St. James Academy. After high school Loretta moved to Fargo, where she worked for the City of Fargo and for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Dakota. In 1953 she met Elmo Erickson at a dance at the Crystal Ballroom in Fargo. They were married in 1957, and spent 44 happy years together. Loretta and Elmo’s home in Moorhead and their lake home were always open to friends and family, and they hosted many gatherings for an extended family that included more than fifty nieces and nephews. Loretta was a member of St. Joseph’s Parish in Moorhead.

After Elmo’s death in 2001, Loretta moved to Falcon Heights, MN, to be closer to her daughter and son-in-law and their family. During her time in the Twin Cities, Loretta became very integrated into the DiGiorno family’s daily life and attended many, many of her grandchildren’s events. She also made many friends at her senior apartment complex and at Corpus Christi Parish. She was in good health and enjoyed an active schedule, including a two week family trip to Germany early this summer where she was able to reconnect with numerous German friends and relatives. Loretta was admitted to United Hospital in St. Paul on June 18th, had successful open heart surgery on June 20th and died unexpectedly on July 6th as a result of complications arising from various difficulties encountered during her recovery.

She was preceded in death by her parents Otto and Agnes (O’Connor) Settelmeyer, her husband Elmo, brothers George, Joe, Mike and John, sisters Mary Lies, Florence Beauclair and Eileen Simon, and by several nieces and nephews.

She is survived by her daughter Kathleen Erickson DiGiorno, son-in-law Vincent DiGiorno, grandchildren Margaret, John, Olivia and Isabella DiGiorno, in-laws Tom and Arlene Lee, Margaret Settelmeyer and Martha Settelmeyer, a large extended family of nieces, nephews and their families, and many, many friends in Moorhead and in St. Paul, including especially Mary Ellen and the rest of the Sixth Street Tuesday Morning Coffee Group.
