Juel "Lud" Robert Mattson

Juel "Lud" Robert Mattson was born October 2, 1954 in Park River, ND to D. Kenneth and Marilynn Mattson. Juel died peacefully in his home in Detroit Lakes, MN on May 2, 2013.

D. Kenneth Mattson and his family moved to Mahnomen in 1955, where Juel attended Mahnomen Public Schools. Juel graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1973. He attended Northland Community College in Thief River Falls, MN for medical technician. Juel also received his EMT certificate in 1978. While in high school Juel was employed by Mahnomen Dairy, making milk deliveries to homes around Mahnomen and also worked for Jack's Motor Sports. After obtaining his education as a medical technician and EMT, Juel spent many years dedicated to serving others while employed at United Hospital Ambulance Service; Norman County Ambulance; Polk County Ambulance; Wimmer Hospital, Ada, MN; Mahnomen County and Village Hospital; St. Luke's Hospital, Crosby, ND; Merit Care Hospital, Fargo, ND; Norman County Implement; truck driver for the Fargo Forum; REM-Northstar; the Treatment Center and Aldor Homes in Crookston, MN; Concordia College, Moorhead, MN; and several years driving beet truck for many farmers surrounding Ada, MN.

Juel "Lud" Robert Mattson was born October 2, 1954 in Park River, ND to D. Kenneth and Marilynn Mattson. Juel died peacefully in his home in Detroit Lakes, MN on May 2, 2013.

Juel volunteered many hours with EVAC, Fargo Police Department Volunteers, and doing sound and video for Atonement Lutheran Church, Fargo, ND and Lund Lutheran Church, Detroit Lakes, MN.

Juel loved music. He attended many music festivals, enjoyed singing and playing keyboard as well as a period of time spent managing and running sound boards for Fargo area bands.

In 1997, after making sure his family was safe during the flood in Ada, Juel returned home to battle the flood waters successfully saving their family home, a harrowing feat.

Juel underwent a kidney transplant in April of 2009. In July of 2011 Juel suffered rejection of his kidney. In August 2011 he moved in with his daughter, Haley, in Detroit Lakes, MN. While living in Detroit Lakes, Juel became very active with Lutheran Congregations in Mission for Christ (LCMC) attending conferences and speaking about his faith journey through his times of trial with his health.

Some of Juel's greatest pleasures came from his love for his animals, camping, fishing, boating, snowmobiling, working on classic cars, golf, NASCAR, his Gold Wing motorcycle, radio controlled cars and airplanes with his son, Shane, three wheeling, campfires, just being outdoors, family get togethers, demolition derbies, rollover derbies, and pinewood derbies.

Juel was happiest visiting and being with others. Juel put his engineering skills to work by hooking a bike trailer to his motorized scooter to take his granddaughters for rides. One day he attempted to take them down the beach in Detroit Lakes one day and became stuck.

Juel's greatest accomplishments in life were his children, grandchildren, and 34 years of sobriety.

Juel is survived by one son, Shane (Debbie) Benter, Mapleton, ND; four daughters, Heidi (Tim) Oien, West Fargo, ND; Heather Mattson, Oakes, ND; Haley (Tyler) Kroshus, Detroit Lakes, MN; Harmony (Chad Mielke) Mattson, Aberdeen, SD; grandchildren: Madison Benter, Elliott and Louisa Oien, Morgan Mattson and Kinsley Kroshus, Macee Holcomb, JaeLynn, Alyssa, and Keilani Mielke, three brothers, James (Liane) Mattson, Eagan, MN; John (Edie)Mattson, Fairbault, MN; Jeff (Sherry) Mattson, Dalton, MN; one sister, Jody (Bernie) Gloe, Warroad, MN; several nieces and nephews, Aunt Julie (Tom)Pierce, Seattle, WA; Aunt Esther Wallum; Uncle Jack (Marilyn)Mattson, Moorhead, MN; Aunt Dorothy Arvidson, Grand Forks, ND and many cousins. Juel is also survived by many friends and acquaintances that loved him dearly.

Juel was preceded in death by his parents, Kenny and Marilynn Mattson, grandparents, Julius and Roberdia Wallum, Carl and Ida Mattson, two uncles, Harlan Wallum and Fred Arvidson, and a grandson, Christopher Mielke.

Services will be held for Juel Mattson on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 11 AM at Shepherd of the Lakes Lutheran Church, 404 Richmond Road, Detroit Lakes, MN. Visitation and Prayer Service on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 from 4-7 PM at David-Donehower Funeral Home, Detroit Lakes, MN with a prayer service at 7 PM.
