Io A. Severson

Io A. Severson, age 93, formerly of Fargo and Fessenden, died May 20, 2013, in Fairfax, VA.

Io, the daughter of Carl and Tilda (Johnson) Wignes, was born November 29, 1919 in Hamberg, ND. Io was a farm girl who enjoyed being outdoors around the farm. She attended rural country school, graduated from Fessenden High School in 1938, then attended Minot State Teachers College (now University). She was united in marriage to Harold Severson, also from Fessenden, on February 6, 1942.

During the WWII years, while Harold was in the Army, Io and son, Terry, moved back to her parents' farm outside Fessenden. When Harold returned, they moved to Grand Forks, ND where Harold attended the University of North Dakota. After Harold's graduation in 1949, they initially lived in Minot, ND, and for a short time in Havre, MT, before returning to Minot. They moved to Tioga, "The Oil Capital of North Dakota," in 1953 during the first oil boom there. They lived in Tioga until 1962, the longest they lived anywhere until retirement, and were very active in community, company (Signal Oil & Gas), and social activities. Harold's oil company then took them to Mentor, MN; Minnetonka, MN; Fargo, ND; Edina, MN; Chillicothe, MO; and Tulsa, OK.

Io's life, in all their communities, was dedicated to her family and her home. She was active in all her local communities through church and several social organizations including Beta Sigma Phi Sorority in Tioga where she served as president. During the time they lived in Minot, Io was a leader in the Cub Scout program. During their Tioga years, Io and Harold were active members of several square dancing clubs and bridge clubs. She worked as bookkeeper-treasurer in a local department store, in her brother-in-law's jewelry store, and served several other associations as secretary-treasurer. She was active in the First Lutheran church wherever they lived.

In 1985 the Seversons retired while living in Tulsa OK. They moved to Fargo, ND where they enjoyed an active retirement for 25 years. For 20 of those years, they wintered in Southern California. Upon Harold's death in 2010, Io moved to Fairfax, VA where her son and his wife, Diane live. She became a resident of Arden Courts in Fairfax near her son's home.

Io is survived by her son, Terrance (Diane), Fairfax, VA; sister, Natalie Zobel, Vista, CA; two grandsons, Carl (Danielle), Monroe, NJ, and Eric (Kimberly), Red Bank, NJ, and great-grandsons Griffin and Liam, both of Monroe, NJ. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Harold; her sisters, Niobe Mitchell and Mercedes Rhyne; and brothers, Sherwood and Merlon.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, May 29 ay 11:00 a.m. at the First Lutheran Church, Fessenden, ND. Visitation will be held Tuesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the Nelson Funeral Home, Fessenden. Interment will be in the Severson family plot in the Hillside Cemetery of Fessenden.
