Lillian M. Hedquist, age 95, of New Rockford, North Dakota, died Saturday, July 21, 2013 at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd.

Lillian Mary Kluck was born October 31, 1917 in Stutsman County, North Dakota the daughter of Clara (Kluck) and step-father Claus Otto. Lillian took advanced tests and graduated from Grace City High School at the age of 15 and attended State Teachers College (Valley City State University) graduating with her Two Year Standard Teaching Degree at age 17. Her first teaching job was a one room school "Highland" west of Mandan, North Dakota.

Lillian M. Hedquist, age 95, of New Rockford, North Dakota, died Saturday, July 21, 2013 at Lutheran Home of the Good Shepherd.

Lillian Mary Kluck was born October 31, 1917 in Stutsman County, North Dakota the daughter of Clara (Kluck) and step-father Claus Otto. Lillian took advanced tests and graduated from Grace City High School at the age of 15 and attended State Teachers College (Valley City State University) graduating with her Two Year Standard Teaching Degree at age 17. Her first teaching job was a one room school "Highland" west of Mandan, North Dakota.

While teaching school at Grace City, ND, she met Marvin Hedquist, a railroad telegrapher for the Great Northern and they were married in Jamestown on July 16, 1947. Their introduction was by her sister and future brother-in-law, Chester Schmid. The four of them became long-time friends and traveling companions. Lillian & Marvin lived in New Rockford until each of their deaths.

Lillian retired after nearly 37 years of teaching, most of that in the First Grade in New Rockford. Hundreds of New Rockford students all got their start in school with Mrs. Hedquist.

Lillian and Marvin were active members of the community as members of the United Methodist Church for 60 years & Lillian a member of the Order of Eastern Star & Homemakers. The couple loved to dance and performed in many community events and pageants. Lillian maintained her cheerful spirits and sense of humor with her "One Liners" through age 95.

She is survived by her loving sister Florence Schmid of New Rockford; and one son Robert (LaVonne) of Miami, Florida.

She was preceded in death by her loving husband Marvin on March 5, 2007, her parents, and her step-brother Russell Otto.

Visitation: Tuesday 1PM - 6PM, with a Prayer Service held at 6PM, and continuing Wednesday 9AM - Noon, all in Evans Funeral Home, New Rockford
