Chester Mauritson, 84, Shelly, MN, died Tuesday, July 30, 2013, at the Sanford Hospital in Fargo, ND.

Chester David Mauritson, the son of Mayne and Selma (Nornes) Mauritson, was born April 3, 1929 in Shelly. Chester was baptized and confirmed in his faith at what is now the Shelly-Marsh River Church. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Climax High School as valedictorian of his class in 1947. On June 11, 1950 he was united in marriage to JoAnne Henderson in Halstad, MN. They were blessed with one son, James. They made their home in Shelly where Chester farmed and drove school bus for many years. Chester moved the Halstad Living Center in 2011 due to poor health.

Chester David Mauritson, the son of Mayne and Selma (Nornes) Mauritson, was born April 3, 1929 in Shelly. Chester was baptized and confirmed in his faith at what is now the Shelly-Marsh River Church. He grew up on the family farm and graduated from Climax High School as valedictorian of his class in 1947. On June 11, 1950 he was united in marriage to JoAnne Henderson in Halstad, MN. They were blessed with one son, James. They made their home in Shelly where Chester farmed and drove school bus for many years. Chester moved the Halstad Living Center in 2011 due to poor health.

Chester was active in church and many civic, local and county organizations. He served as President, Sec.-Treas, Council Member and taught Sunday School for 30 years. He also served on committees to raise extra money for the needs of the church, such as chimes and the new organ. He even filled in for the Pastor and gave the Sunday sermon on occasion.

He was an active member of the Lions Club in Shelly and Toastmasters Club in Ada. He received second place in the District 20 competition in Jamestown in 1974.

He served as Mayor and Council Member of Shelly and as Chairman of the Shelly Centennial Committee in 1997.

Chester served as a member of the Norman County FMHA Board for 2 terms and was Vice President of the Norman County Historical Society. He played an active role in the organization of the museum in Shelly.

He served on the Halstad Telephone Board for 35 years, 25 of them as President of the Board. He was so interested in the telephone industry and received awards from the National Telephone Association for his service. His tenure included many changes in the industry and the building of a new phone company office complex in Halstad.

Chester loved music, he was a member of a male quartet, local church choir, and the Inspirations. He loved reading, especially about the Civil War, and enjoyed gardening.

Chester is survived by his loving and supportive wife of 63 years, JoAnne, Shelly, their son, James (Rita), Moorhead, MN, 3 grandchildren, Jeremy (Monica) Mauritson, Robbinsdale, MN, Jay (Cindy) Mauritson, Moorhead, MN, Annie (Jason) Gunkel, Moorhead, MN. He is also survived by five great grandsons that were the joy of his life, Miles Mauritson, Ryan Mauritson, Zach Anderson, Jaxen Gunkel and Emmit Gunkel. Other survivors include one sister, Ruth Dyer, Grand Forks, ND, and a brother, Herb, Shelly, MN, as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. Also included are special friends, Pastor Roger and Judy Michaelson and their son Jeremy. He was preceded in death by his parents, Mayne and Selma, his in-laws, Ernest and Myrtle Henderson, two sisters, Irene and Lorraine, and a brother, James.

Blessed be the Memory of Chester Mauritson. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Funeral: 11:00AM, Saturday, August 3, 2013, at Shelly Marsh River Lutheran Church, Shelly.

Visitation: 5-7PM Friday with a 7PM Prayer Service at Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, MN.

Burial: Shelly Cemetery, Shelly, MN.
