Eugene "Gene" Gerdon

Eugene "Gene" Gerdon, 74, passed away Thursday, August 1, 2013, enjoying a morning horse ride.

Eugene Erroll, son of John and Rachel (Mallack) Gerdon was born January 13, 1939 at Forbes, ND. They lived on a farm 14 miles Northwest of Forbes, where Gene and his sister Marlyss attended country school. In 1945, he moved with his parents and sister to rural Cogswell, ND. He attended country school near Cogswell until the 5th grade, and finished his schooling in Cogswell, graduating in 1956. Following his education, Gene worked for the Signal Department with the Great Northern Railroad in Minnesota, before returning home to help on the family farm. On August 28, 1958, he was united in marriage to Margie Westra. They made their home near the farm. Gene was employed at the Lincoln Oakes Tree Nursery until he started driving truck for Bobcat in 1965. He was on the road a lot so it was Margie's job to be at home with their three children.

Gene married Linda Pies on August 28, 1993. They built a log home on the farm and enjoyed working with horses and trailriding in the Badlands. Gene continued driving truck for Bobcat until 2002, when he retired. Gene was an active member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

He is survived by his wife, Linda; one daughter, Brenda Dye, Breckenridge, MN; two sons, David (Sara) Gerdon, Fargo, ND and Randy (Sara) Gerdon, Wahpeton, ND; three step-children, Jennifer (Jason) Kallenberger, Leola, SD, Chad (Terra) Pies and Jesse Pies, all of Aberdeen, SD; his sister, Marlyss Hirsch of Arizona; eight grandchildren, Sean, Nick, Jake, Matt, Addi, Jacob, Jayden, and Everett; and six nieces and nephews, Marla, Darla, Kim, Lisa, Kyle, and Kevin. He was preceded in death by his parents, and his brother-in-law, John Hirsch.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, August 3, 2012 from 5:00 to 7:00 with a prayer service starting at 7:00 p.m. at Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Oakes, ND. His funeral will be Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, Oakes, with burial to follow at the Oakes View Cemetery. An on-line guestbook may be signed at www.dahlstromfuneralhome.com
