At age four he moved with his family back to North Dakota to a farm in Dazey where he grew up with his sister Beverly and brother Mike. He had many fond memories of time spent with family, visiting, singing, fishing with his Grandpa John, doing chores and working the fields. He graduated from Hannaford High School in 1957, attended Valley City State College, and married Joyce Brainard on October 5th, 1958. They raised four boys; Jay, Jeff, Jon and Jeremy, moving from

Valley City to Fargo in 1971. After selling insurance for a time, Jack became an entrepreneur, starting many businesses in such diverse areas as motels, gas stations, markets, restaurants, clothing stores, discount stores, education, fertilizer supply, health food, rental property, and of course Western Protection, a security company that served both North Dakota and Minnesota for 35 years.

After retirement in 2004, he traveled by car with his beloved partner Shirley Haugen, spending winters in Mesa, AZ, and summers in Fargo, visiting their families frequently along the way. His greatest joy was having the time to attend many events and holidays with his four sons and 10 grandchildren, taking great pride in all his family and their accomplishments.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff of Hospice of the Red River Valley for their wonderful loving care.

There will be a funeral service on Monday, August 19, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. at Peace Lutheran Church, Fargo with visitation starting at 9:00 A.M. Burial will be at 2:00 P.M. at Union Lutheran Church Cemetery, Hannaford N.D.
