Wilfred "Bill" J. Oster, 79 of Lidgerwood, ND passed away Friday, August 30, 2013 at his home in Lidgerwood. Funeral mass will be Tuesday, September 3, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood with Fr. Robert Smith as celebrant and burial with military honors by the Lidgerwood American Legion Bullis Post #84 and the North Dakota National Guard will be at Calvary Cemetery, Lidgerwood. Visitation will be Monday, September 2, 2013 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. all at St. Boniface Church. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the funeral mass at the church. Pallbearers will be: Brady Gabel, Brandon Gabel, Haley Gabel, Ben Reinke, Carly Reinke, Spencer Reinke, Luke Oster, Bethany Oster & Caitlin Gabel.

Wilfred (Bill) Jerome Oster was born October 20, 1933 to Anthony, Sr. & Frances (Gaukler) Oster, on a farm near Tyler, ND. In 1938, the family left the farm and moved to Lidgerwood, ND. He attended kindergarten in a rural school near Great Bend, ND, finished elementary school at St. Boniface Catholic School, Lidgerwood, and graduated in 1951 from Lidgerwood High School. After graduation, he worked for Maack’s Grocery Store and various other jobs until entering the U.S. Army in 1954. Upon completion of basic training, he was stationed at Fort Carson, Colorado, then went over seas to Korea for a 16 month tour of duty, until his discharge in 1956. When returning to Lidgerwood, he purchased a tavern from Bob Knaust.

Bill was united in marriage to Romelle Ann Illies on February 9, 1959 at St. Boniface Catholic Church. They made their home and raised their three children in Lidgerwood. Bill sold the tavern business when he began working for the U.S. Postal Service in Lidgerwood, where he was appointed postmaster on February 1, 1975. He retired from the U.S. Postal Service in 1989.

Bill was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus, American Legion, the Lidgerwood Fire Department, the Lidgerwood Jaycee’s, and Chamber of Commerce. He was instrumental in helping to get the Lidgerwood Swimming Pool built. Bill also helped with organizing the first 4th of July Celebrations and parades in Lidgerwood.

He was an avid gardener who took great pride in his vegetables and his special soups. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and friends, working on his computer, and playing cards with the gang.

Survivors include his wife, Romelle, and three children: Kevin (Brenda) Oster of Lidgerwood, ND; Pamela (Bryan) Gabel of Milnor, ND; and Sharlene (Jim) Holmly of Horace, ND. Grandchildren: Luke and Bethany Oster; Brady (Caitlin), Brandon, and Haley Gabel; and Ben, Carly, and Spencer Reinke. He also leaves behind his brother, Tony (Elaine) Oster, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, Tony, Sr. and Frances Oster; two sisters, Caroline Pieterick and Delores Gustaf; two brother-in-laws, Everett (Pete) Pieterick and Thomas Gustaf; mother-in-law; Amelia Illies; and father-in-law, Ben Illies.
