Vern Surprenant

Vern was born December 31, 1926 in Terrebonne, MN to John and Josephine (Bougie) Surprenant. He graduated from Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls in 1945. Vern was united in marriage to Cecile Fournier on October 21, 1952 at St Anthony’s Church in Terrebonne, MN.

He joined the US Army in November 1952 and was honorably discharged in November 1954. Vern then continued the operation of the family farm. He was also employed by the US Postal Service from 1969 until he retired in 1989, always taking the time to visit his patrons along the route. He was a field inspector for the ASCS office and served on the Soil & Water Conservation Board. He was a member of St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Terrebonne until its closing, serving on their Parish Council and Cemetery Board. After St. Anthony’s closed he became a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. He was very devoted to his Catholic faith. Vern was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He took great pride in the care of his yard devoting many hours. He also enjoyed traveling to visit with his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, loving all the time that he spent with his grandchildren.

Vern is survived by his wife Cecile of 61 years and by his beloved children – Emily of Grand Forks, Allen (Julie) of Fargo, Dale (Diane) of Moorhead, Laurie of Grand Forks, Joan Skiple of Bismarck, Janet (Darrell) Wiskow of Red Lake Falls and Randy (Jana) of Reiles Acres. He is also survived by his grandchildren – Kayla (James) Walter, Christopher Surprenant, Kate (Jay) Puterbaugh, Matthew, Nicole and Britnee Surprenant, Travis Skiple, Jennifer (Patrick) Niemackl, Sarah (Nick) Brilz, Melissa (Justin) Nagel, Brandon and Mikayla Wiskow, Grace and Joshua Surprenant and great-grandchildren – Emma Skiple, Jayden Surprenant, Braden Nagel and Brody Puterbaugh.

Siblings – Sr. Maureen Surprenant of Crookston, MN and John “Bud” (Bernadine) Surprenant of Mesa, AZ. Brother –in-law, Tim Baril of Townsend, WI; Sister-in-law, LaVonne Pearson, Naperville, IL.

Vern was preceded in death by his parents; Brother: Ralph, Sisters: Eva Arel, Gloria Normandin, Doris Kanyusik and Kathryn Baril.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, October 19, 2013 at 1:00 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls, MN with Fr. Chuck Huck officiating. Visitation one hour prior to the service. Wake service will be held Friday, October 18, 2013 at 5-8 PM with a prayer service at 7:00 at the church.
