Shirley was an active member of St. Arnold's Catholic Church and the St. Arnold's Christian Mothers. She taught and coordinated St. Arnold's CCD Program for many years. She was also a Cub Scout Den Mother, member of the Milnor Band Mothers and 4-H leader with Bernard for Live & Learn 4-H club.

Shirley was an intense NDSU Bison and MN Twins fan, never missing a game if possible. She was able to see her beloved Target field for a Twins game in July through the program Cherished Hopes. Shirley couldn't wait for fall to come and football season! She couldn't wait for Saturdays to go out to the farm and watch the Bison work their way to their third National Championship!

Shirley enjoyed sitting on her deck at the farm playing with the newest batch of kittens and looking at her roses bloom! Shirley was most proud of all her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and was the central hub of all the goings-on for her children; regular phone calls to Mom kept the children connected to each other!

She was extremely loved and will be deeply missed by her seven sons, Stephen (Cherie) Nicolai, David (Ronda) Nicolai and William (Marlys) Nicolai, and Douglas Nicolai all of Milnor, ND, Phillip (Catherine) Nicolai, Lawrenceburg, IN, Mark (Kari Erickson) Nicolai, Fargo, ND, Richard Nicolai of Kentucky; her daughter Ann (Reed) Hertz, Carson, ND; 17 grandchildren; and 5 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Joan (Norman) Rheault, and numerous nephews and nieces.
