Eugene E. McManus, 84, of rural Detroit Lakes, MN, died January 26, 2014, in his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River and his family.

Gene was born in Fargo, ND, to Margaret and Phillip McManus, July 24, 1929. He attended high school in Dilworth, MN, and upon graduation began working for Burlington Northern Railroad. Gene married Dorine "Toni" Evenson on September 20, 1956, and together they raised two sons, Phillip and Paul. During the family's years in Dilworth, Gene served as mayor and as a city councilman. He was also involved in the Dilworth School District where he served on the school board. Gene was president of BLE Lodge 202 and commander of the American Legion. He retired from BNSF in 1991 as a locomotive engineer. Gene and Toni later moved to the lake to spend their retirement years.

Eugene was preceded in death by his son, Paul; his sister, Mary; brothers, Bill and John; and his parents.

He is survived by his wife, Toni; his son, Phillip, and daughter-in-law, Lynne McManus, of Enderlin, ND; grandson, Sean McManus of Wahpeton, ND; granddaughter, Shelby McManus and her partner, Dawson Rasmussen, of Fargo; sister, Katherine, of Dilworth; and brother, Bob, of Des Moines, WA.

Visitation begins Friday, January 31, 2014, at 12 noon, followed by a Memorial Service at 1 PM, in Korsmo Funeral Chapel, Moorhead.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers, contributions be made to Hospice of the Red River Valley.
