• Maisy Jablon, 10, a fourth-grader from Kennedy Elementary, paints part of a sign that says “CREATIVITY” on March 16 at what will be the Katherine Kilbourne Center for Creativity in Fargo, while the Plains Art Museum ceremonially kicked off construction of the expansion.

Photographer comment: “This appeared to be a fairly routine press conference, but I was much more intrigued by the activity of the student artists than the officials’ speeches. It helps to be able to anticipate what a picture might look like from a vantage point you have not yet seen. This was the case here as I pre-focused my lens and held the camera pointing down over the student’s head higher than my own. I was grateful for the red smock and blue plate as those colors helped tie the artist to the mural.”

Michael Vosburg / Forum Photo Editor
 • Sister Marie reacts as she starts to feel the mist from a fire hydrant being used to cool runners during the Fargo 5K in May, while the temperature was in the 90s.

Photographer comment: “Many readers of the paper liked this photo because the nun was truly enjoying the run and appreciating the cooling spray of the water on such a hot day. It was also very out-of-the-ordinary garb to be wearing on such a hot evening run before the big Fargo Marathon the next day.”

Dave Wallis / The Forum
 • North Dakota State University football players celebrate their win over Sam Houston State during the FCS title game Jan. 7 at FC Dallas Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Photographer comment: “Getting great game action from covering a title game is an adrenaline rush in itself. But grabbing a shot like this after the game is over just is the cherry on top.”

Carrie Snyder / The Forum

 • North Dakota State's Travis Beck intercepts a pass intended for Sam Houston State's Torrance Williams to tilt the FCS title game in favor of the Bison on Jan.7 in Frisco, Texas. Beck was named the most valuable player after the 17-6 win.

Photographer comment: A North Dakota kid making a big play on the biggest stage doesn't get any better for Travis or myself.

David Samson / The Forum
 • Steven Mason, bottom, operates the hydraulic winch while Chris Green is lifted in a safety chair on a drilling rig near Williston, N.D., in April.

Photographer comment: Going out to Williston to cover the oil boom was an exciting opportunity. It's always fun to document situations that I have no experience in, like how to run an oil rig.

Carrie Snyder / The Forum
 • A duck swims with her ducklings in a drainage ditch in north Fargo on June 7.

Photographer comment: Sports and nature are my top subjects I like to cover. This feature photo I shot while covering a news event. Always nice to come back with a cute standalone photo from the day.

Carrie Snyder / The Forum
 • Josh Werner, left, of Perham struggles with Branden Schorr of Kasson Mantorville during the quarterfinal round of the Minnesota Class AA team wrestling tournament March 1 in St. Paul. Schorr won the match by decision.

Photographer comment: I like the arrangement of limbs in this photo. This, like many of my favorite wrestling photos, has this jangled mess of limbs with body parts in unlikely positions. The momentary confusion over what belongs to whom is half the fun. What elevates it from most of my wrestling photos is how good a look we get at his face. I really like that it's sharp enough to see the lights reflected off his eyes.

Michael Vosburg / Forum Photo Editor
 • Frost adorns a tree the morning of Feb. 3, off University Drive in south Fargo.

I was lucky enough to be out and about the morning this thick frost was covering the trees. I drove around looking for one that I could isolate against the dark sky, but also had enough light hitting it to show up in the dark. I crouched in the snow to lower the lights in the background to below the branches and tried to balance the lights with the trunk. I liked the blue and purple hues of the still-dark sky.

Michael Vosburg / Forum Photo Editor

Michael Vosburg / Forum Photo Editor

"I wish I could say that I exercised some great skill in making this photo, but sometimes all you are is a witness to events. This photo is all about the powerful emotions of this runner. I was just lucky enough to be there."
