Dolores was born May 20, 1924 in Barnesville, MN to Paul and Julia Fankhanel. She graduated from Hillsboro High School in 1942. She graduated from NDSU in 1946 with a degree in Home Economics. She taught in Lancaster, MN, Frazee, MN, Barnesville, MN, and Oakes, ND. Dolores married Clarence Ebert on June 25, 1950. They made their homes in Barnesville, MN, Oakes, ND, and Fargo, ND. Dolores moved into the Hillsboro Nursing Home in March 2011.

Wesley R. "Wes" Spear
Wesley R. "Wes" Spear, 102, of Oakes, ND, passed away July 21, 2013 at the Oakes Community Hospital.

He was born on March 9, 1911 in Hudson Township, near Oakes, ND, to Howard H. and Minnie (Koch) Spear. Their home was the former Hudson Stage Coach Inn, which has been moved to a farmsite nearby. Wes received his elementary education in Hudson School and graduated from Oakes High School with the class of 1929. He worked with his father on the farm until the fall of 1933, when he began working for Emil Tedin as a welder and mechanic. In the spring of 1934, Wes began working for A.O. Foster Company at the Pure Oil Station and in 1935, as parts man and car sales at Foster Chevrolet, Inc.

Shirley Mae Parkhouse was born on August 1, 1928 in Arthur, ND to James and Vida (Viestenz) Parkhouse. She graduated from high school in Jamestown, ND.

Shirley married Glenn Schlenvogt in Jamestown, ND on August 10, 1947. While he worked for Ottertail Power Company, they lived in Harvey, ND, Devils Lake, ND, Oakes, ND, and Fergus Falls, MN. They retired in 1988.

June Masse, 68, of Oakes, ND died on Tuesday, August 6, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes.

June Masse, daughter of Stanley "Ted" and Mildred (Stevens) Baska, was born April 4, 1945 in Britton, SD. She was raised near Glover, ND, and graduated from Oakes High School in 1963. She attended Valley City State University, graduating in 1967. June then moved to Fargo, where she taught from 1967 to 1969. On June 14, 1968, June married Richard Masse in Oakes. The couple both taught school in Humboldt, MN from 1969 to 1977. In 1977, they moved back to the family farm near Glover. June was employed at the Oakes Community Hospital from 1977 to 2006. Richard passed away on February 26, 1999.

Muriel Kay Cotten
Muriel Kay Cotten, 77, of Oakes, ND passed away at Avera St. Luke's in Aberdeen, SD. A private graveside service will be held.

Muriel was born April 22, 1936 to Leland and Lue Ella (Starkweather) Hansen in Sioux Falls, SD. Kay graduated from high school in 1954 and then attended several different Universities to earn a teaching degree. She taught in Casselton, ND for many years. She was married to Raymond Kraus. Gary and Kay were united in marriage on September 5, 1996 in Fargo, ND. They then moved to Oakes, ND where she substitute taught for several years. Kay loved to read, spend time with her friends and students, go to the movies, and attend Bible Study Group. She was a member of The Oakes Church of the Nazarene, The ND Retired Teachers Assoc., and The Dickey County Historical Society, where she served as Secretary for many years. She is survived by her husband, Gary, her two sons, Robert (Dawn) King of West Fargo, ND and Rodney (Cynthia Breuer of Destin, FL. Two Grand Children, Max and Adriana, and several nieces and nephews. Raymond E. Banderet
Raymond E. Banderet was born November 12, 1921 to Louis and Louise (Cochet) Banderet on the family farm south of Straubville, ND. He departed this life Monday, April 29, 2013 at Oakes Good Samaritan Center in Oakes, ND, at the age of 91 years.

Ray attended rural grade schools and graduated from high school in Havana, ND in 1939. He farmed and raised livestock with his father and brother, Emil for many years. Later in life, he and Emil partnered with his nephews, Lowell and Bob.

Liesa Marie Hill, 37, of Oakes, ND, returned to her heavenly home on June 25, 2013, due to a tragic vehicle accident.

She was born July 27, 1975 in Greybull, WY. She grew up in Wyoming with a love of time spent breaking and training horses, hunting, and many other outdoor activities with her family. She graduated from Faith Baptist High School in 1993, and then attended college in Sheridan. Liesa was proud to have earned her Certified Pharmacy Technician with an Associate Degree of Applied Science from North Dakota State College of Science.

Betty L. Knecht
Betty L. Knecht, age 63, of Rogers, ND, (Formerly Oakes, ND) passed away after a very long and courageous battle with breast cancer on Saturday, July 6, 2013, while at Sanford Health Palliative Care Unit.

Betty Lou Cowley was born on October 25, 1949 in Britton, SD, to George and Ruth Cowley. Betty grew up and attended the Engle Country School, until she attended Hecla High School where she graduated in 1967. Betty then moved to Aberdeen, SD where she worked for Northwestern Bell as a telephone operator until 1970. Shortly after high school Betty met the love of her life, Elmer J. Knecht Jr. (Butch). They were married on June 28, 1968. Butch and Betty started their life and family home on a farm near Guelph, ND. Betty helped work on the farm right alongside her husband Butch. They had three children, Corinna, Melissa and Curtis. In 1987, Betty took a job at Lincoln Oakes Nursery, and the family moved into Oakes, ND. Betty also worked many years for Schafer Seed, Alco, and PCI, all of Oakes. The summer of 2007 first brought exciting news the couple bought a lake home at Ashtabula. Then, in August 2007, Betty was diagnosed with stage 4 Breast Cancer, she underwent surgery at the University of Minnesota, in Minneaoplis, MN, where they told her family that she had only a few short months to live, and to "go home and enjoy her fall, because this Thanksgiving would be the last she would see."

Holly Sanders, 59 of Fargo, ND, passed away April 20, 2013 at Elim Care Center, Fargo, ND.

Holly Jeanne, daughter of Fay and Irene (Bork) Sanders was born on November 25, 1953 at Oakes, ND. She attended Special Education classes in the Oakes school system from the time she was seven until her eighteenth year. Holly then moved to the Minot Vocational School for two years, beginning in 1971. In 1973, she moved to Fraser Hall (a sheltered workshop) in Fargo, where she worked at the Evaluation and Training (ETC) Center for 8-9 years. Holly moved into her own apartment in Fargo in 1984 and worked in various capacities at Fraser workshop and vocational facilities. In July of 2001, Holly moved into an ISLA apartment through Red River Human Services Foundation. She began employment at the Developmental Work Activity Center (DWAC) and the Olive Garden Restaurant through the support of Friendship, Inc. In December 2007, Holly went to live at an MSLA apartment setting at Friendship.

Irene Sanders, 96, of Oakes, ND, died August 6, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes.

Irene Henrietta Bork was born February 9, 1917 at Edgeley, ND to Gust and Emma (Beglau) Bork. On April 9, 1917 she was baptized into the Lutheran faith in a country church near Edgeley, ND, and she was confirmed on March 25, 1934. She attended LaMoure Country grade school, and graduated from Edgeley High School in 1934. She attended North Dakota State University, graduating in 1938 with a BS degree in home economics education. Irene taught for two years in Watford City, ND and one year in Bismarck, ND prior to her marriage. She also spent eight summers at Camp Grassick at Dawson, ND.

Colleen L. Johnson
Colleen Johnson, 75, of East Grand Forks, MN died Sunday, August 18, 2013. Colleen was born January 13, 1938 in Twin Valley, MN the daughter of Oscar and Stella (Ness) Johnson. She grew up in East Grand Forks graduating from EGF Senior High School and attended Akers Business College in Grand Forks. She worked 45 years at Home of Economy as a bookkeeper and was a choir member at Our Savior’s Church in EGF for 50 years.

Survivors include her sister Shirley Peters, Oakes, ND, and brother Oscar “Bud” (Diane) Johnson, Fargo, ND. She is preceded in death by her parents, sisters, Evelyn Mahle, Dorothy Strommen and Violet Johnson and brother Merelyn Johnson.

Alice O. Olson, 86, of Oakes, ND, passed away November 24, 2013, at St. Rose Care Center, LaMoure, ND.

Alice Olive, daughter of Ole and Caroline (Knutson) Bakken was born March 27, 1927 in Vining, Minnesota. She grew up and attended school in Glyndon, Minnesota, graduating from Glyndon High School in 1946. She married John Hanson on February 5, 1949, and they lived in various places in Minnesota. Together they had five children; Marie, Jean and Ann who died at birth on December 26, 1950, Judy born on September 11, 1952, and Steven who was born on September 18, 1955 and died on July 3, 1967.

Earl Schmitz
Earl Schmitz, 87, of Oakes, ND, passed away January 25, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Earl Douglas, son of Peter and Edith (Anderson) Schmitz was born on June 28, 1926 at Crete, North Dakota. He attended Divide #4 Country School, and then started farming. Earl served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II, from June 12, 1945 to November 12, 1946. After his discharge he returned to the Oakes area, where he farmed his entire life. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church. Earl will always be remembered as a very hard worker.

Eleanor Block, 102, of Oakes, ND, formerly of LaMoure, ND, passed away on April 6, 2014, at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes.

Eleanor Rasmusson, daughter of Ramus and Martina (Nesby) Rasmusson was born on June 9, 1911. She attended grade school at the Black Loam School near Fort Ransom, ND. Eleanor was united in marriage to Norbert Block January 20, 1933 at Fort Ransom. They farmed near Verona until the fall of 1933, when they moved with Norbert's father to a farm near LaMoure. They were active in farming until March of 1990, when Norbert became ill. He passed away on June 24, 1990. Eleanor continued to live on the farm until that fall when she moved into town. Eleanor lived with her son Robert, both in LaMoure and later Oakes, before they became residents of the Good Samaritan Society.

Ronald Christenson
Ronald Christenson, 78, of Oakes, ND, passed away April 5, 2014 at Sanford Medical Center, Fargo, ND.

Ronald Wayne was born to George and Pearle (Thompson) Christenson on April 11, 1935. He was raised on a farm north of Oakes, and graduated from Oakes High School with the class of 1953. He served his country in the U.S. Army from 1955 to 1958, stationed in Texas and California. Ron married Jolene Kupitz at St. John's Lutheran Church in Oakes on July 12, 1958. They lived in Van Nuys, CA, where Ron managed Magic Muffler. In 1960 they moved to North Dakota, and Ron drove truck for a year and a half before returning to California. In 1966 they moved to the Crete area and farmed. Ron and Jolene moved to Oakes in 1984, but continued to farm until retiring in 1988.

Gerald Hopewell
Gerald Hopewell, 80, Fargo, ND died May 8 at Bethany Homes in Fargo. Gerald was born Feb. 1, 1933 in Oakes, ND to Guy and Emma (Kern) Hopewell. He attended rural Milnor, ND school. He married Geraldine Johnson Feb. 11, 1953 in Lisbon, ND. Gerald worked for ranchers near Lisbon and Milnor, ND, Montana and Wisconsin. He operated a logging and salvage yard in Leonard, ND. He served as a minister for Church of God Seventh Day in Fargo. He retired in 1995. Gerald is survived by his wife, Geraldine; children, Cindy Hopewell of West Fargo, Dianne (Dale) Mischke of Kindred, Karen (Kenneth) McMahon of Kindred, Geoff (fiance, Kari) Hopewell of Kindred, Jesse (Wanda) Hopewell of Kindred, Jack (Lori) Hopewell of Kindred, Jeremy (Pamela) Hopewell of Kindred and Lucinda Hopewell of Kindred, a sister; Shirley Funk of Lisbon and a brother, Marvin Hopewell of Milbank, SD. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Faye Tangen and Lorraine Lundin and a brother, Clark.

The funeral service will be at 2:30 PM Monday, May 13th at Trinity L

Margaret E. Medd
Margaret E. Medd, 91, of Grand Forks, ND died Saturday, November 2, 2013 in Valley Eldercare Center, Grand Forks.

Margaret Elaine Hall was born the daughter of Wilbur and Bessie (Williams) Hall on December 23, 1921 in Souris, ND. She graduated from Sherwood, ND High School and attended North Dakota Agricultural College and graduated from Dakota Business College. On August 22, 1943, Margaret married Raymond Charles Medd in Fargo, ND. Margaret and Ray lived in Crawford, NE while Ray was stationed at Fort Robinson. After WWII, they settled in Oakes, ND where they owned the Norway Spur Grain Company. After Ray died in 1968, Margaret returned to school and graduated from NDSU with a degree in early childhood education and special education. Margaret helped hundreds of children during her career in Oakes, Valley City, and Bottineau. She believed that every child deserved the best education possible. For her work, Margaret was named the North Dakota Outstanding Special Educator. In 2008 Margaret moved to Grand Forks to be closer to her family. Margaret was a lifelong member of the P.E.O. She was a member of the United Parish in Bottineau. She enjoyed traveling, her home at Lake Metigoshe and being a grandma and great-grandma.

Ruth McKay
Ruth McKay, 72, formerly Jamestown and Bismarck, ND, died Tuesday, February 4, 2014, at Good Samaritan Society in Oakes, ND.

Ruth Ann Bartkowski was born November 5, 1941, in Jamestown, ND, the second of five daughters born to August and Dorcas (Stockeland) Bartkowski. She attended school at Cogswell, ND, and graduated from Sisters of St. Joseph School of Nursing in Grand Forks in 1962. Ruth travelled extensively, working as a nurse in New York, Montana, Colorado, Iowa, before meeting her future husband, Leslie McKay, in Bloomfield, IA. The two were married in March 1973 in Lancaster, MO, where they then made their home in Bloomfield then Garner, IA. Les and Ruth moved to North Dakota in 1985, and Ruth worked as a Registered Nurse at the North Dakota State Hospital in Jamestown from 1986 until she retired in 2007. Ruth and Les were active volunteers at the Jamestown nursing homes, and they loved to travel and visited friends and family all over the United States and abroad. When Les died in 2010, Ruth made her home in Bismarck with daughter Emily's family where she was a very special grandma to grandson Flynn, 5.

LeRoy Zimbelman
LeRoy Zimbelman, 86, of Oakes, ND, passed into his Father's arms on June 3, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed, but his integrity, love and amazing sense of humor will always be remembered.

LeRoy Zimbelman, son of Lee and Ida (Gemar) Zimbelman, was born December 3, 1926 southwest of Oakes, where he grew up. He attended rural school through the 8th grade and then Oakes High School until he was seriously hurt in a farm accident. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Rasmussen on January 8th, 1950. LeRoy worked as a mechanic at the Chevrolet Garage in Oakes for the first five years of marriage, then bought the Rasmussen family farm, where he raised his family for 25 years. During LeRoy's farming years, he continued to work as a mechanic in town between growing seasons. In 1982 LeRoy and Lorraine moved into town, where LeRoy was employed at the IH Implement before going to work with his best friend, Budd Larson at Larson Sales. LeRoy and Budd worked together 30 years. He enjoyed all the people who came to the shop and all the challenges of old tractors and Budd's special projects. LeRoy was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church.
