Madeline Maddock, 80, of Oakes, ND, passed away December 29, 2012, at the Good Samaritan Society, Oakes, ND.

Madeline Mary Rose was born February 9, 1932 to Wilfred and Rose (Lizotte) Masse at Coventry, Rhode Island. She attended school at St. Vincent DePaul Catholic School in Coventry. After her schooling, Madeline was employed at a textile mill in Centerville, Rhode Island sewing Christmas stockings. Madeline married James Maddock on October 16, 1954 in Coventry, Rhode Island. To this union a daughter and four sons were born. They lived in West Warwick, RI prior to coming to Oakes in July 1969.

Edmund “Donnie” Albrecht, 70, of Moorhead, MN formerly of Fargo, ND passed away on Saturday, March 30th at Essentia Health in Fargo after a year of battling cancer (multiple myeloma).

Ed was born December 24th, 1942 to Edmund A. and Florence (Rueb) Albrecht in Eureka, SD. He grew up on a farm near Leola, SD before moving into town for a few years. He later moved to Oakes, ND graduating from Oakes High School in 1960. He married Sharon (Rindahl) of Oakes, ND on March 9th, 1963. The couple settled in Fargo and moved to Moorhead in 2011.

Elizabeth "Betty" Anderson
Elizabeth "Betty" Anderson, age 81, of Oakes, ND, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2012, at the Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes, ND.

Elizabeth Ann Iverson, daughter of Edward and Murial (Johnson) Iverson was born September 2, 1931 at Brampton, North Dakota. She attended Brampton country school and graduated from Ellendale High School. Betty earned her teaching certificate from Ellendale Normal Institute and then taught country school for one year at Brampton. She was united in marriage to Alfred Anderson on June 16, 1950 at the Cogswell Lutheran Parsonage. They made their home in Fargo before buying a farm and returning to the Brampton community, where they raised their children. In 1965 they moved to Oakes, and Betty was employed at the Oakes Hospital. For years, Betty and Alfred enjoyed having a house full of daycare kids. Each one of them had a special place in their heart, and it was like going to Grandma and Grandpa's house. Betty and Alfred also cleaned at various churches in Oakes.

Kelly Dean Larson, 43, passed away at his home in Eagle River, AK on August 3, 2012. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2012 at 1:00 pm at Atonement Lutheran Church in Fargo, ND.

Kelly was born in Oakes, ND on May 17, 1969 and graduated from Williston High School in 1987. Kelly attended North Dakota State University and received his Construction Management degree in 1992, as well as his Civil Engineering Degree in 2001. Kelly worked for the ND Department of Transportation in Bismarck, ND and Moore Engineering in West Fargo, ND.

Mark Paul Zwetzig was born October 22, 1965 in Oakes, ND to Beverly and Norman Zwetzig of Lisbon, ND. Mark died January 22, 2013 at Essentia Hospital, Fargo ND after a brief and sudden illness.

Mark was raised on a farm near Lisbon, ND. Growing up on the farm he loved to ride horses and motorcycles. He had a great time with his 3 brothers and 4 sisters on the farm. Mark graduated from Lisbon Public School in May 1984.

Raymond E. Banderet
Raymond E. Banderet was born November 12, 1921 to Louis and Louise (Cochet) Banderet on the family farm south of Straubville, ND. He departed this life Monday, April 29, 2013 at Oakes Good Samaritan Center in Oakes, ND, at the age of 91 years.

Ray attended rural grade schools and graduated from high school in Havana, ND in 1939. He farmed and raised livestock with his father and brother, Emil for many years. Later in life, he and Emil partnered with his nephews, Lowell and Bob.

Holly Sanders
Holly Sanders, 59 of Fargo, ND, passed away April 20, 2013 at Elim Care Center, Fargo, ND.

Holly Jeanne, daughter of Fay and Irene (Bork) Sanders was born on November 25, 1953 at Oakes, ND. She attended Special Education classes in the Oakes school system from the time she was seven until her eighteenth year. Holly then moved to the Minot Vocational School for two years, beginning in 1971. In 1973, she moved to Fraser Hall (a sheltered workshop) in Fargo, where she worked at the Evaluation and Training (ETC) Center for 8-9 years. Holly moved into her own apartment in Fargo in 1984 and worked in various capacities at Fraser workshop and vocational facilities. In July of 2001, Holly moved into an ISLA apartment through Red River Human Services Foundation. She began employment at the Developmental Work Activity Center (DWAC) and the Olive Garden Restaurant through the support of Friendship, Inc. In December 2007, Holly went to live at an MSLA apartment setting at Friendship.

Gerald Hopewell
Gerald Hopewell, 80, Fargo, ND died May 8 at Bethany Homes in Fargo. Gerald was born Feb. 1, 1933 in Oakes, ND to Guy and Emma (Kern) Hopewell. He attended rural Milnor, ND school. He married Geraldine Johnson Feb. 11, 1953 in Lisbon, ND. Gerald worked for ranchers near Lisbon and Milnor, ND, Montana and Wisconsin. He operated a logging and salvage yard in Leonard, ND. He served as a minister for Church of God Seventh Day in Fargo. He retired in 1995. Gerald is survived by his wife, Geraldine; children, Cindy Hopewell of West Fargo, Dianne (Dale) Mischke of Kindred, Karen (Kenneth) McMahon of Kindred, Geoff (fiance, Kari) Hopewell of Kindred, Jesse (Wanda) Hopewell of Kindred, Jack (Lori) Hopewell of Kindred, Jeremy (Pamela) Hopewell of Kindred and Lucinda Hopewell of Kindred, a sister; Shirley Funk of Lisbon and a brother, Marvin Hopewell of Milbank, SD. He is also survived by 19 grandchildren, and 4 great-grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, 2 sisters, Faye Tangen and Lorraine Lundin and a brother, Clark.

The funeral service will be at 2:30 PM Monday, May 13th at Trinity L

LeRoy Zimbelman
LeRoy Zimbelman, 86, of Oakes, ND, passed into his Father's arms on June 3, 2013 after a courageous battle with cancer. He will be greatly missed, but his integrity, love and amazing sense of humor will always be remembered.

LeRoy Zimbelman, son of Lee and Ida (Gemar) Zimbelman, was born December 3, 1926 southwest of Oakes, where he grew up. He attended rural school through the 8th grade and then Oakes High School until he was seriously hurt in a farm accident. He was united in marriage to Lorraine Rasmussen on January 8th, 1950. LeRoy worked as a mechanic at the Chevrolet Garage in Oakes for the first five years of marriage, then bought the Rasmussen family farm, where he raised his family for 25 years. During LeRoy's farming years, he continued to work as a mechanic in town between growing seasons. In 1982 LeRoy and Lorraine moved into town, where LeRoy was employed at the IH Implement before going to work with his best friend, Budd Larson at Larson Sales. LeRoy and Budd worked together 30 years. He enjoyed all the people who came to the shop and all the challenges of old tractors and Budd's special projects. LeRoy was a life-long member of St. John's Lutheran Church.

Della Johnson
Della M. Johnson, age 103, of Fullerton ND, went to be with our Lord, January 20, 2013, at the Good Samaritan Society of Oakes ND.

Della Matilda Johnson, born October 31, 1909, daughter of George and Susanna Johnson, Swedish immigrants and pioneers, of Fullerton ND. Della grew up on the family farm with 12 brothers and sisters. She attended Algrove School #2 (formerly Rosebud) and graduated from Oakes High School in 1926. She received her degree in elementary education from the State Normal and Industrial College, Ellendale ND (UND Branch) in 1961. She taught school for 34 years in North Dakota, Idaho and Minnesota, before retiring to the family home in Fullerton, ND. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary for over 70 years. She attended the Lutheran church in Fullerton and later in Oakes. Della loved crossword puzzles, Scrabble, crafts, reading many newspapers, tracking family history and visiting with family and friends. Teaching for many years allowed Della to know families for many generations, remembering them by name and always asking about them. Della lived independently until her mid 90's, when she moved to the Good Samaritan Society of Oakes.

Orville Nundahl
Orville Nundahl, 91, of Oakes, ND, passed away November 30, 2012 at the Oakes Community Hospital.

Orville was born in Perry, North Dakota on Easter Sunday, March 27, 1921. He was the second of four children born to Christian and Mathilda Nundahl, and they lived in a house Christian built on a farm about 1½ miles north of Rutland. Orville’s father, Christian managed elevators and their family moved several times living in Ransom, Jamestown, and Cayuga, before settling in Oakes in 1931 when Orville was 10 years old. Orville attended the Oakes Public School and joined the Army in October of 1940. During his 5 years in service, Orville was stationed at Fort Francis E. Warren in Wyoming, Fort Lewis in Washington, Camp Carson in Colorado, and in New Port News, Virginia. He was a member of the 188th Field Artillery Regiment and then the 98th Field Artillery Battalion, which was converted to the 6th Ranger Battalion and they led the invasion of the Philippines. Orville was honored with the Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal, the Philippine Liberation Medal, American Defense Service Medal, a WW II Victory Medal, a Combat Infantry Badge, two Bronze Stars, and was honorably discharged in September of 1945. Orville married Betty Borden of Hecla, South Dakota on June 5th, 1946. They made their home in Oakes, and were blessed with six children. Orville was very handy with machinery and worked as a mechanic for several years. He also tried some farming, and lastly worked for Shafer Seed Company for 28 years, retiring in 1986. He was a lifetime Member of the American Legion and was very proud of his Service for his country.

Betty Sorenson
Betty Lou Sorenson, 76, left this earth to meet her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at her home in Oakes, ND.

Betty Lou was the thirteenth child of Carl and Anna (Olson) Westrom, born on October 25, 1936 in Arne Township, Benson County, North Dakota. She attended school in Maddock, graduating from high school in 1955. She worked as a nanny for two years after high school in Sioux Falls. Betty met Gerald R. Sorenson, a young Marine soldier on a bus, returning from leave to his home in Harvey, North Dakota. Gerald R. Sorenson and Betty Lou Westrom were united in marriage at the North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock, North Dakota on February 20, 1957. Jerry and Betty made their home in a variety of places due to Jerry's job with the Bureau of Reclamation including Bismarck, ND, Othello, WA, Loup City, NE, before moving to Oakes, in 1966. Betty worked for the Good Samaritan Center in Oakes for 27 years, before retiring to be the primary caregiver to her husband for 12 years before he passed away on January 12, 2001. Betty enjoyed crafts, puzzle solving and being with her family.

Elizabeth passed away on Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead at the age of 102.

Elizabeth Anna Lindner was born on April 19, 1911, the daughter of Mathias and Amelia (Ponzer) Lindner in Becker County, MN. She grew up in this area, moving into Frazee, MN where she was a child. Elizabeth was united in marriage to Theodore Piper Sr. on November 6, 1929. They lived near Durbin, ND, where they raised their family and farmed for many years. Theodore passed away in March of 1976. She moved to Lynchburg, ND, and later to Casselton, ND, before making her home at Eventide for the last two years.
