Joel Andrew Berge was born March 18, 1988 to John and Nancy (Kohls) Berge in Fargo. He was raised in Fargo, and graduated from Fargo North High School in 2006. He worked as a finish and framing carpenter for several years. He enjoyed swimming, handball, and golf, and was proud of his “hole-in-one” at El Zagal Golf Course when he was 10.

Dennis L. Johnson
Dennis L. Johnson, 64, passed away on Thursday, October 24, 2013. Born in Wheaton, MN, he was the son of the late Olaf and Irene Johnson. Dennis was a retired member of the Local 300 Plumbers and Steamfitters Union. In retirement, he enjoyed traveling to visit his children and grandchildren in Yorktown, Virginia. Dennis is survived by his daughter, Holly (Paul) Carpenter; son, Jason (Jessica) Johnson; sister, Judy Hausmann; brother, Mark Johnson; along with numerous nieces, nephews, and grandchildren.

Arrangements are in the care of Wright Funeral Home in Moorhead, MN.

Lorraine Genevieve Noles, of Fergus Falls, died Thursday, June 13, 2013, at PioneerCare in Fergus Falls.

She was born July 22, 1918, in Binford, ND, the daughter of Herman and Lena Osen. Lorraine graduated high school in Devils Lake, ND and went on to attend Concordia College and Dakota Business College in Fargo, ND. Following graduation from the Business College, Lorraine was employed with CH Carpenter Lumber Co. in Valley City, ND. After the U.S. entered World War II, Lorraine became a Civil Servant taking on a bookkeeper position at the Adjutant General's Office in Washington DC.

Celia Burk, longtime resident of the Williston, ND, area and later of Fargo/Moorhead, passed away September 24, 2013, at Sheyenne Crossings Care Center, West Fargo, ND, under the care of Hospice.

Celia Joan Hanson was born on July 22, 1927, the second of five daughters, to Agnes (Blegen) and Harold Hanson at Thor, MN, where her father was a carpenter by trade and her mother was a homemaker. Celia's father, who had lost an eye in a battle in France during WWI, named Celia in honor of one of his nurses.

Robert A. Gigler, 96, Ada, MN, died at Grand Forks, ND, on Sunday, May 19, 2013.

Robert was born April 13, 1917, at home on the farm near Ada, the son of Frank and Martha (Duenow) Gigler. He grew up and attended country school near Ada. From 1940 to 1955, he farmed in Green Meadow Township rural Ada. Robert was united in marriage to Lorraine Larson on March 1, 1940, in Ada. He moved to Moorhead, MN, in 1955 and worked as a finish carpenter for many years as they also lived in Washington and California, before settling in Coon Rapids, MN. Lorraine died in 2000 and Robert continued to live at home until recently moving to Bridges Care Community in Ada.

Elmer “Red” Halland, 83, Tower City, ND died on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center, Arthur, ND.

Elmer was born Feb. 3, 1930 on the family farm near Buffalo, ND to Nickolai and Evelyn (Christianson) Halland. He graduated from Buffalo High School. Elmer married Rita Von Bank on Nov. 5, 1949 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Buffalo. They made their home NW of Buffalo where they raised their family and farmed for many years. Red also worked for JE Kreig & Sons Construction and was a member of Carpenters Local 1176 in Fargo, ND. He later operated R. Halland Construction and Red’s Trailer Sales in Tower City. In 2007, he entered Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo and entered the Good Samaritan Center, Arthur in 2009.

Royce W. Rodacker, 61, Casselton, North Dakota, passed away on Thursday, August 1, 2013, near West Fargo, North Dakota, from injuries he sustained in a car accident.

Royce was born on October 10, 1951 to Myrtle (Vietz) and Allen Rodacker in Fargo, North Dakota. Royce grew up and graduated from West Fargo High School in 1969. Royce worked in construction as a finish carpenter for most of his career. He worked for Curtis Construction, Fargo, ND, building churches. For the last two years he worked for Diversified Welding in West Fargo, and he quickly grew to love the job. They quickly became a part of his family.

DeLaine Tomlin, 87, Jamestown, surrounded by her loving family and under the care of Hospice, passed away on Monday, October 14, 2013 at Ave Maria Village in Jamestown where she had resided since May.

DeLaine was born on January 25, 1926 to Sebastian and LuLu (Heasley) Spangler on the family farm southwest of Eldridge. She grew up and received her education in Lenton Township and graduated from Jamestown High School. She attended Valley City State University and Jamestown College and received her teaching certificate. She then taught in a one-room schoolhouse in Sharlow Township. Other early employments included Jamestown Hospital, CH Carpenter Lumber and North Dakota Farmers Union.

Russell Charles Nolan
Russell Charles Nolan, age 57, resident of Cooperstown, ND died at home on Thursday, January 16, 2014.

Russell was born on October 22, 1956 in Chelsea, MA the son of Joel and Corinne (Meredith) Randall. He grew up in Williamsburg, VA. In 1973 he joined the Army and was stationed in Korea. When he returned he worked as a framing carpenter in Phoenix, AZ, he also worked as a custodian in Raleigh, NC hospital. He spent many years as a parts manager for Komatsu Equipment. He also worked years at Caterpillar and Case Power & Equipment. Russell met Crystal Germundson at a bowling alley in 1985 and they were married September 9, 1989. After Case & Company was sold the Nolan family moved to Moline, IL where he worked for Murphy Brothers Pipeline Company. In January 1994 Russell & family moved back to ND. He worked at Sheyenne Tooling, Cenex in Hope, ND and TSR in Colgate, ND. Russell spent the last 14 years working for Posi Lock Puller as a warehouse manager.

Jerry (Jerome) Olson, 65, lost his 2 year battle with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma on February 28, 2014, with the love of his life, his wife Maggie, by his side.

Jerry was born on November 18, 1948. He was raised in Wisconsin, and served his country in the Air Force from 1967-1971. Jerry worked as a truck driver and carpenter for many years before becoming disabled from a work injury. Jerry always knew how to make his family and friends laugh with his jokes and sense of humor. Even throughout his long illness and up to his last day, he found a way to make light of every situation. He loved bowling, wood working, and spending every spare moment with his loving wife. Jerry's family would like to express sincere thanks to the Fargo VA for the compassionate care they gave him over the last 2 years, and especially during his final week of life.

Mark Steven Kartes
Mark Steven Kartes, 61, of Dickey, ND passed away February 9, 2014 surrounded by his loving family.

Mark was born on July 18, 1952 in Jamestown, ND to Harriet Joyce Kartes and the late Charles Anthony Kartes. He graduated from Dickey High School in 1970 and attended North Dakota State University. On June 24, 1972 he married Corine Carpenter in Dickey and was a loving husband for 42 years. Mark owned & operated Kartes Kattle with his late father (Charles), brother (Thomas Kartes) and later his son (Steven Kartes). He enjoyed golfing, hiking, traveling, and spending time with his family. He was an active member of the agricultural community and was a board member of Adrian Equity Elevator, Russell Township, and FSA. He was a member of the Farm Bureau committee where he served as president for several years. Mark demonstrated his faith by serving as Assumption Church trustee and also served as a cemetery committee member.
