Harriet Louise Helland
Harriet Louise Larsen Helland, 90, passed away on March 10, 2013, at Hi-Acres Manor, Eventide, in Jamestown, ND. She was born August 9, 1922, in Fargo, ND, to Harry and Mabel (Andersen) Larsen, Harwood, ND. She attended school at Prosper, ND, and graduated from Oak Grove High School, and Moorhead State Teacher’s College, earning a degree in Elementary Education. In 1946, she married Lester Helland of Amenia, ND. She taught multiple grades in rural schools in Cass County for many years.
Harriet and Lester were members of Messiah Lutheran Church located in North Fargo. She was very active in one of the circles, altar guild, and served many ways within the Church. They were involved in local square dancing clubs and would travel the United States and Canada to square dance. They also enjoyed ballroom dancing. Friday and Saturday nights were always spent at the Elks or Eagles dancing. Harriet was active in the Shrine Ladies activities at El Zagal Shrine Club, and was a member of several other clubs. She was an avid bridge player and also enjoyed bingo.

Jeremy Ian Linghor, age 38, of Argusville, ND, suddenly died on Sunday, March 17, 2013, in Williston, ND, as a result of a car accident.
Jeremy Ian Linghor was born on July 1, 1974 in Bismarck, ND, to Neal and Priscilla (Kibbel) Sprecher. Jeremy was adopted by Tim Linghor. He grew up and attended school in Williston, ND, graduating from Williston High School in 1992. Jeremy then attended Wahpeton School of Science for Diesel Mechanics. When he completed school, he worked for the Basin Electric Power Co-Op in Beulah, ND for about a year. While in Wahpeton, Jeremy met Courtney Johnson. They were married on July 25, 2000, in Rapid City, SD. Together they moved to Fargo, where he worked for General Equipment for 20 years before beginning work for Ernst Trenching in 2012. Jeremy was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing as well as drag car racing. He was a mischievous person who enjoyed practical jokes. On Saturday, Jeremy became a proud member of the Boozefighters Motorcycle Club. He is also a member of the Argusville Volunteer Fire Department.

Jeremy Ian Linghor, age 38, of Argusville, ND, suddenly died on Sunday, March 17, 2013, in Williston, ND, as a result of a car accident.

Betty Lou Sorenson, 76, left this earth to meet her Lord and Savior on Tuesday, May 7, 2013 at her home in Oakes, ND.
Betty Lou was the thirteenth child of Carl and Anna (Olson) Westrom, born on October 25, 1936 in Arne Township, Benson County, North Dakota. She attended school in Maddock, graduating from high school in 1955. She worked as a nanny for two years after high school in Sioux Falls. Betty met Gerald R. Sorenson, a young Marine soldier on a bus, returning from leave to his home in Harvey, North Dakota. Gerald R. Sorenson and Betty Lou Westrom were united in marriage at the North Viking Lutheran Church in Maddock, North Dakota on February 20, 1957. Jerry and Betty made their home in a variety of places due to Jerry's job with the Bureau of Reclamation including Bismarck, ND, Othello, WA, Loup City, NE, before moving to Oakes, in 1966. Betty worked for the Good Samaritan Center in Oakes for 27 years, before retiring to be the primary caregiver to her husband for 12 years before he passed away on January 12, 2001. Betty enjoyed crafts, puzzle solving and being with her family.

Mavis Carlotta Nymon
Mavis Carlotta Nymon was born on September 15, 1921, in Canton, New York, and grew up in Fargo, ND. She attended North Dakota Agricultural College (now North Dakota State University), graduating in 1943 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Dietetics, Home Economics Education, and Chemistry. She then moved on to Cornell University as a research assistant, where she received her Master of Science degree in Nutrition and Biochemistry. While at Cornell, she conducted enzyme research with Dr. James Sumner, 1946 winner of the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Mavis taught as Instructor in Nutrition at the University of Minnesota from 1946 - 1953. In 1954, she embarked on what she referred to as "the great adventure of my life", teaching the Baha'i Faith in French Togoland and Liberia in West Africa. With her friend Vivian Wesson, she helped establish the first Baha'i School of West Africa in Bomi Hills, Liberia. After she returned to the United States, she earned a Master of Public Health Education (1960) and a Ph.D. in Nutrition and Public Health (1963) from the University of Minnesota.
Mavis started her teaching career in the Department of Food and Nutrition at NDSU in 1960. She taught for 23 years, serving as department chair for 16 years, and developed the graduate program for the Master of Science in Food and Nutrition degree. She served as major advisor to 32 M.S. majors, in addition to serving as a member of many other M.S. and Ph.D. committees in various colleges at NDSU. In her teaching career, Mavis reached out to students from many different countries. Her graduate students came from the United States, Taiwan, India, Nigeria and Egypt.

Chester Reiten, 89, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, while holding his wife’s hand, in a Minot assisted living facility.
Chester Maynard Reiten was born Nov. 14, 1923, at Hastings, North Dakota in Barnes County, to Lars and Carrie (Smedshammer) Reiten. He was raised on a farm and graduated from Hastings High School in 1941. He started college that fall at North Dakota Agricultural College, now North Dakota State University in Fargo. During World War II, Chet enlisted in the U.S. Navy on June 7, 1943, serving as an Ensign and Commanding Officer of a Landing Craft Infantry Ship (LCI ) in the U.S. Navy. Chester was in the Pacific Theatre where the U.S. was preparing to invade Japan and the war ended. He received an Honorable Discharge in July of 1946.
