Harold A. Bonawitz
Harold A. Bonawitz, 89, of Fargo, ND, died on Friday, June 7, 2013, in Essentia Medical Center, Fargo, ND. Harold was born November 13, 1923, in Greenbush, MN, to Raymond and Agnes (Nelson) Bonawitz. He grew up and attended school in Fargo, ND. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Harold married Joyce Voldness on August 28, 1949, in Thief River Falls, MN. Together they lived in Fargo for a time before settling in Moorhead. For 36 years, Harold worked as a driver and a salesman for Dwyer Beverage Co., and Hansen Distributing. As a young man Harold raised pigeons and later enjoyed working in his yard and flower gardens and took up golf in his retirement years. He enjoyed attending Bison football games and had season tickets for the FM Redhawks for 10 years. Harold was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the VFW and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Fargo.

He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joyce; daughters, Nancy (Larry) Erickson of Moorhead, MN, Pamela (Don) Blaeser of Fertile, MN; grandchildren, Jodi (Adam) Sorenson of Austin, TX, Eric (Ambra Markos) Odness of Brooklyn, NY, Emily Blaeser of Fertile, MN, Misty (Brandon) Hanson of Elk River, MN, Tara (Kris) Lofstrom of Fargo, ND; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Kailey, Nicholas, Ashlyn, Trystan and Sven; sister, Betty (Wallace) Grund; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Kenneth R. Pier
Kenneth Pier, 69, Fargo, died June 2, 2013 at Villa Maria in Fargo. The son of Dorothy Ramberg Pier, born in New Jersey, Ken was raised in Germany, Hutchinson, MN and Fargo, ND. He graduated from Fargo Central in 1962 and last summer thoroughly enjoyed his 50th class reunion. Ken attended NDSU and was an extreme Bison football fan. He married Connie Pranke and they had two sons, Joel and Erik.

Ken valiantly battled MS for 40 years and had been recently cared for by loving staff at the Villa Maria in Fargo.

I asked recently whether Fargo needs a new stadium for North Dakota State University Bison football. Or, in the alternative, whether a new multipurpose events center to replace the Fargodome needs to be built.
