Beverly Hanson was born Dec. 5, 1924, to Harold S. and Mildred M. (McKoin) Hanson. Her parents settled in Fargo in 1921 shortly after Harold’s discharge from the U.S. Navy.

She attended Fargo Central High School and graduated in 1941. She then graduated from University of North Dakota with a bachelor's degree in journalism.
