BISMARCK – As derailed train cars exploded near his city on Dec. 30, Casselton Fire Chief Tim McLean called a phone number he thought would put him in touch with someone who could dispatch a Fargo-based hazardous materials team to the fiery scene.

Ardythe J. Stempf
Ardythe J. Stempf, 85, of Glyndon, MN, passed away on Tuesday, November 26, 2013, in Essentia Health, Fargo, ND. Ardythe was born April 17, 1928, to Elmer and Anna (Johnson) Mechum. She grew up and attended school in Glyndon, graduating in 1946. She then continued her education at Moorhead State University. On April 14, 1950, Ardythe married Ray Stempf in Glyndon. Together they lived in Chicago for three years before moving back to Glyndon. In 1964, they purchased Valley Window and Siding, which they owned and operated for many years. Ardythe enjoyed traveling and spending time at their lake homes on Lake Eunice and Lake Lida, but most of all spending time with family.

She was well known in Glyndon for her love of cats, “The Cat Lady.”

Age 78, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 26, 2013. Tom served in the U.S. Army and retired from the Postal Service. He is survived by his loving wife, Gloria; sisters, Patricia (Robert) Campbell, Phyllis (Stephen) Henrikson; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Felix & Madonna Gruchalla. Funeral services Thursday, 11 AM with visitation 1 hour prior to service at Emmanuel Christian Center, 7777 University Ave. NE, Spring Lake Park. Interment Ft. Snelling.

Jean Guy
Jean Guy, 90, of West Fargo, ND, died Friday, July 5, 2013, at Sanford Health in Fargo.

Elizabeth "Jean" Mason was born September 8, 1922, in Fort Yates, North Dakota, daughter of Sidney and Clara (Bond) Mason. Her family farmed on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. Not long after Jean's birth, her family moved to Chaffee, North Dakota and then to Fargo, where she graduated from Fargo High School. She obtained a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles and Clothing from the North Dakota Agricultural College (N.D.A.C., now North Dakota State University, Fargo), in 1944. She was a member of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Former North Dakota Governor, William L. "Bill" Guy, 93, of Fargo, ND, died of Alzheimer disease, on Friday, April 26, 2013, at Eventide at Sheyenne Crossings, West Fargo, ND. Bill was elected to four terms as Governor and served from 1961 to 1973.

William Lewis Guy was born September 30, 1919, in Devils Lake, North Dakota, son of William L. and Mable (Leet) Guy.
