Bessie Rehn was born June 27, 1919, the daughter of John Albert and Clara (Kopperud) Rehn, on the family farm in rural Moorhead. She was raised there and was baptized and confirmed at North Buffalo Lutheran Church, rural Moorhead.

Alex Sahr
Alex Sahr, 96, longtime resident of Fargo ND, passed away on April 18, 2014 at the Fargo Veterans Hospital. Alex Donald Sahr, son of Aaron and Martha Sahr was born on November 20, 1917 in Balfour, ND. Alex attended school in Balfour and after graduation joined the CCC program at Kramer, ND in 1936. In 1938 he transferred to Socorro, New Mexico and worked on the Bosque Del Apache game refuge. In June of 1942 he joined the US Air Corps and after six months of training joined the 15th Air Force and served in North Africa, Sicily and Italy as an aerial gunner with a B-24 Squadron, In February 1944 he and his crew transferred to England and completed their tour of duty with the 8th Air Force.

Alex married Carlene Jefferson on December 19, 1946 they remained lifelong companions for 61 years. They made their home in Fargo, ND where they raised their family.

Maxine Eldora Hilde
Maxine (Wood) Hilde, 87 of Fargo, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2014 at Elim Care Center after a short illness.

Maxine, daughter of Sidney and Ethel (Jones) Wood was born on February 27, 1927 in Lisbon, ND. She graduated from Lisbon High School at the age of 16 and then worked in a war-related job both in Lisbon and in Fargo before her marriage to Ordell Hilde of Lisbon, ND in 1947. Maxine moved to Fargo in 1972. She worked at Bethany Homes until her retirement.

Barbara Geurin
Barbara (Trom) Geurin, age 82, of Fargo, ND, passed away peacefully under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, on April 7, 2014, surrounded by her three daughters.

Barbara Gertrude (Trom) Geurin was born on March 23, 1932 in Kindred, ND to Gordon and Hazel (Myhra) Trom. She graduated from West Fargo High School. After she completed her schooling, she worked as a nanny in the Fargo area. She enlisted in the Air Force in 1951. Her basic training took place at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, TX. Much of her time was spent as a clerk stenographer at Randolph Headquarters in San Antonio where she achieved the rank of Airman First Class. She married Paul Geurin on January 9, 1954 at Davenport Lutheran Church. They moved to Anchorage, AK for two years while her husband was stationed at Elmendorf Air Force Base. Barbara and Paul and their family moved many times over the years including time spent in Savannah, Georgia, Little Rock, Arkansas, South Dakota, Nevada, Okinawa, and Tennessee, until they finally settled in North Dakota. Barbara worked with Fredrikson Funeral Chapel in Kindred, ND for a time doing light housekeeping. She applied at St. Luke’s (later MeritCare) and they hired her on the spot for a position as a Nurse’s Aid. She worked there for 23 years on the surgery and orthopedic floors. Barbara retired in 1994. She lived in Moorhead, MN for 21 years and then moved to River Square Apartments in Fargo in 2002. She recently lived at Riverview and the assisted living unit, Crosshaven.

Marie Gussiaas, age 81, of Carrington, ND, passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 6, 2014, surrounded by those that meant the most, her family. Marie courageously battled cancer and died with dignity.

Marie Carr was born on February 6, 1933, the daughter of Edward and Irene (Theis) Carr at her parents’ farm in rural Carrington. She graduated from Carrington High School in 1951.

Katherine (Sittauer) Gartin
Katherine (Sittauer) Gartin, age 56, passed away April 3, 2014 from cancer. She was preceded in death by her father, Leroy Sittauer. She is survived by her son, Kevin; mother, Mary Sittauer; sisters, Nancy Rosell and Mary Ann Brock; brother, Kevin and stepsons, Neil and Nolan Gartin. Kate worked at Pax Christi Catholic Church in Eden Prairie for 17 years and served in the active Air Force Reserves. Kathy was a happy, positive, energetic and spiritual person who lived a full life of peace and love, serving others. Evelyn Christine Hilden
Evelyn Christine Hilden was born in Starkweather, North Dakota, on March 18, 1917, and died in Lake Forest, California, at the age of 96, on March 9, 2014, just 9 days before her 97th birthday. She was an adventurous, independent woman who enjoyed the arts, loved to read, and had impeccable taste.

A member of Dazey (North Dakota) High School’s class of 1934, Evelyn later in life claimed the people of Dazey were the friendliest she’d ever met. She went on to earn her teaching degree from Valley City State Normal School (now Valley City State University) in Valley City, North Dakota, and later earned a masters degree from Pepperdine College in Los Angeles, California. Her first teaching job was in Lisbon, North Dakota. Three years later, she answered a call for teachers from the fast growing state of California and went west to seek her fortune there. In 1945, Evelyn took a year off to go to Paris, France, where she taught at an Army base and traveled, returning to California to resume her career. A lover of the arts and travel, the Utah Shakespeare Festival in Cedar City and the Hawaiian Islands became two of her favorite vacation destinations. After 39 years of teaching, Evelyn retired to Leisure World/Laguna Woods, California, where she worked at the security gate for 20 years. In 2011, Evelyn moved to Freedom Village in nearby Lake Forest.

Thelma H. Lindberg
Thelma H. Lindberg, 81, Fertile, MN, died Friday, March 28, 2014, at Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile. Thelma Helene Lindberg was born Feb. 15, 1933, in Bear Park, MN, to Harold and Thora Sirjord. She was baptized and confirmed at Faaberg Lutheran Church. She graduated from Gary High School in 1949, when she was 16. In 1973, she received her LPN degree from Agassiz Valley School of Practical Nursing, Crookston, MN. On June 3, 1950, Thelma married Leo Lindberg at the Faaberg Church parsonage in Rindahl, MN. They spent their married life on a farm near Fertile where they raised 6 children. Thelma created a loving home where her children, their spouses, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren learned about living with faith, grace, dignity, wisdom, and good humor. Thelma generously served her church and community. A member of Varnes and Concordia Lutheran Churches, she taught Sunday school and was active in the Ladies’ Aid. Thelma was President of WELCA, participated in Christian Women’s Club, T.E.C, and Birthday Club. She worked as a Charge Nurse at Fair Meadow Nursing Home from 1973 to 1995. In retirement, she volunteered at Fair Meadow, participated in Red Hat Ladies and kept up with her lifelong hobbies of traveling, baking, quilting, gardening, knitting, and reading poetry and historical fiction. Throughout her life, Thelma was a steadfast friend to many. Thelma’s great joy in life was seeing her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren enjoying themselves at her Cable Lake cabin and attending their activities. Thelma is survived by her children: Lee Lindberg, Fertile, MN; Mark (Sue) Lindberg, Fertile; Jeff (Randi) Lindberg, Baxter, MN; Kevin (Peggy) Lindberg, Fargo, ND; Brian (Kathi) Lindberg, Mentor, MN; Teresa (Mark) Aakhus, Roosevelt, NJ; 13 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, one brother, Hiram (Harriet) Sirjord, Moorhead, MN, three sisters, Altha Spaeth and Sonja Nelson, both of Mahnomen, MN, and Vivian Johnson, Paynesville, MN. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leo; mother, Thora; father, Harold; and stepmother, Elaine.
