Incoming Fargo bishop’s former diocese didn’t participate in abuse audit
GRAND FORKS – An annual report, sponsored by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, says an independent audit and study found 2012 had the biggest drop in allegations of sexual abuse by priests in a decade. But the report also singles out one diocese as the only one that refuses to take part in the annual audit and data collection of compliance with the conference’s own 2004 Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People: the Diocese of Lincoln, in Nebraska.

Joanna C. Egan, 58, of Fargo, passed away at her home on May 3, 2013. Joanna Claire Egan was born in Boston, Massachusetts, on December 2, 1954, to Howard and Mary (Hill) Egan. She grew up in Rolla, ND, and graduated from St. Mary’s High School in Devils Lake, ND, in 1973. She married Gregg Engelhart in Devils Lake in 1975. She is survived by her children Patrick (Tanya), Mandan, ND; Maureen (Matt) Simet, Brookings, SD; Michael (Ami), Custer, SD; and Bryan (Anna), Minneapolis, Mn; 5 grandchildren, mother, Mary Egan, and sisters Kathleen Garza, Peggy (Dan) Kurtz, and Meredith (Scott) Pfennig. She was preceded in death by her father. A private service will be held Wednesday, May 8 at 2:00 p.m. at Hanson Runsvold Funeral Home

Leland Matthew Johnson, 85, Hillsboro, ND and Mesa, AZ passed away March 7, 2013 in Mesa after a short battle with cancer.

Leland was born January 4, 1928 in Red Wing, MN the son of Fred and Laura Johnson. He attended various schools in ND graduating from Forman High School in 1947. He studied auto mechanics at the State School of Science in Wahpeton. He moved to central North Dakota where he worked on the Garrison Dam. It was during this time that his daughter Patricia was born. They returned to Forman where he operated a Mobil bulk oil gas truck.

Daniel “Doc” Oien Sr., 89, of Binford, ND, died Thursday, March 14, 2013 surrounded by his family at Nelson County Health System-Care Center in McVille, ND.

Daniel was born September 26, 1923 near Binford, ND to Fredrick and Olive (Gilbertson) Oien. He graduated from Binford Public School. He married Ione Leean on December 10, 1948 at the Bethany Church parsonage. Doc was a life long farmer. He also served on the Bethany Free Lutheran Church Board. Doc loved horses, cows and dogs. He sang for many funerals and weddings.
