David L. Redmann
David L. Redmann, 72, West Fargo, ND passed away on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at Bethany on University, Fargo with Shirley Essary at his side along with sister Donna present. He was born on October 17, 1941 at his maternal grandmothers’ home in Enderlin, ND to Otto and Leone (Welke) Redmann. He grew up on a farm in Nome where he attended country school. He graduated from Tower City High School.

Following graduation, he enlisted in the Army. Dave also served in the National Guard for ten years after his discharge from the Army. While serving in the Guard, he attended Dakota Business College where he earned a business accounting degree. Dave worked in the banking industry for over 30 years retiring due to illness in 2012. He also worked for Ward Muscatell attending car auctions as a car buyer and purchased all the vehicles for the Hawley, Mn dealership. Dave enjoyed this immensely.

Dula Clark was born December 2, 1928 in Tower City, ND to parents Roy C. and Mary Maude (Barkley) Clark. She grew up in Tower City and graduated from high school there. Dula married Keith B. Bishop on September 5, 1947 in Fargo, ND at First Presbyterian Church.

Elmer “Red” Halland
Elmer “Red” Halland, 83, Tower City, ND died on Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013 at the Good Samaritan Center, Arthur, ND.

Elmer was born Feb. 3, 1930 on the family farm near Buffalo, ND to Nickolai and Evelyn (Christianson) Halland. He graduated from Buffalo High School. Elmer married Rita Von Bank on Nov. 5, 1949 at St. Thomas Catholic Church, Buffalo. They made their home NW of Buffalo where they raised their family and farmed for many years. Red also worked for JE Kreig & Sons Construction and was a member of Carpenters Local 1176 in Fargo, ND. He later operated R. Halland Construction and Red’s Trailer Sales in Tower City. In 2007, he entered Bethany Retirement Living, Fargo and entered the Good Samaritan Center, Arthur in 2009.

What a doll! Tower City woman sews doll versions of famous figures
TOWER CITY, N.D. - Betty Kappel, of Tower City, has been sewing since before she started school. Kappel, who is “just about 88 years old,” said she’s been sewing “practically all my life.” “I love it,” she said. You can see that love in the doll collection she’s made. The collection includes figures in the image of presidents, literary characters and other personalities.

Violet "Vi" Haugtvedt
Violet "Vi" Haugtvedt was born January 23, 1927 in Norwegian Grove Township in Ottertail County, Minnesota, the daughter of Ingvald and Bernice (Julsrud) Haugtvedt. Vi grew up on several different farms in Pelican Rapids/Rothsay/Barnesville communities. She graduated high school in Barnesville, MN. After graduation she worked in Chicago for Northwestern Bell and later transferred to the Fargo Moorhead area for a few years. On February 20, 1949 Vi married Harold "Harry" Degenstein. Together they had two children, Peggy Lynne and Joel Alec. They made their home in the Fargo Moorhead area until Harry's job moved them to Jamestown and later Detroit Lakes, MN. In 1960 they moved back to Jamestown and Vi started working at the ND Farmers Union State Office. She worked there until 1992, retiring after 32 years with them. Harry passed away on November 6, 1993. They were married for 44 years. Vi continued to make her home in Jamestown.

Vi met Albert Wolf in the fall of 1997 at a senior singles dance in Merricourt. It was the first dance either one of them attended after the death of their spouses. They found they had much in common; going to Hardees for coffee, walking, fishing, drives in the country, family activities and sharing their faith. They were married on May 5, 1999.

Helen Eilene Fitzpatrick, 89, passed away on September 18, 2013 at St. Luke’s Hospice House in Kansas City, Missouri.

She was born in 1924 in Miller SD to Charles “Pard” and Lucretia (Monroe) Brandsted. They moved to the Red River Valley of North Dakota in 1934 to farm. Helen went to a one-room country school and Amenia High School. She graduated in Home Economics from North Dakota Agricultural College (now NDSU) in Fargo then taught in Tower City after her marriage to Edward Leach in 1947. They had 4 children; Barbara Lea, of Kansas City, James Leach of Manteca, California, Douglas Leach of San Ramon California and Michael Leach of Couer d’Alene Idaho.

Mavis was born to CK (Eddie) and Edna (Johnson) Butts in Maddock, ND on August 14, 1924 as the oldest of 6 children. Mavis graduated from Leeds High School. She attended Business School before working at medical clinics and county courthouses in Hillsboro and Devils Lake. Mavis married Robert “Bud” Reierson on October 18, 1945 in Devils Lake. They had 4 children and moved to Tower City, ND in 1962. Mavis and Bud ran the Tower City Truck Stop and the Tower City Motel where she assisted with the bookkeeping and many other tasks that the businesses required.
