PRAIRIE ROSES: To Mark McEvers, whose quick action helped save a life. McEvers, a major in the North Dakota National Guard, was playing a recreational basketball game in Devils Lake on Dec. 6 when he saw a man collapse. McEvers grabbed an automated external defibrillator from the hallway. Another player, meanwhile, checked the pulse of the man, who was turning blue. A third man performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Their combined efforts helped save the man’s life; the man wouldn’t have survived without their intervention, emergency responders said.
