James Eugene Bateson
James Eugene Bateson, age 66, was born on November 10, 1947 to Alvin and Florence (Jivery) Bateson in Hibbing, MN. He was called home to the Lord on December 12, 2013 following a car accident.

Jim is survived by his wife, Muriel of Gary, MN; two children, Anthony (Rachel) Bateson of Walhalla, ND and Jennifer (Kurt) Yanish of Alvarado, MN, and they also claimed one more honorary son, James (Lisa) Mitchell of Fargo, ND. He has five grandchildren and claims two others: Andrew, Noah and Taylor Bateson, Cameron and Micaela Yanish, and Brady and Samantha Mitchell; two brothers: Patrick (Patsy) Bateson of Hayward, WI and George (Ann) Bateson of Fridley, MN; mother-in-law, Margie (Ordale) Thronson; three brothers-in-law: Bruce (Elva) Hemmingson of Coon Rapids, MN, Wayne Hemmingson of Gary, and Stuart (Kathy) Hemmingson of Eagan, MN; and numerous nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all.

John “Jack” K. Vining
John “Jack” K. Vining, 85 of Leonard, ND, passed away on Friday, December 13, 2013 at his home.

Jack was born on August 30, 1928 in Fargo, ND to Lenley and Marion (O’Bleness) Vining. He graduated from Chaffee High School and attended Concordia College. Jack served in the US Air Force during the Korean War. On May 11, 1954, he married Eva Hromick in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Jack spent his working years as both a farmer in the Chaffee area and as an aerial crop sprayer.

Glennice Houser Baumgartner, 77, West Fargo, ND died on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at Essentia Health, Fargo.

Glennice McClaflin was born April 2, 1936 to Ollie Paeper and was raised by her grandparents, Charles and Tina Paeper. She grew up in Oriska, ND and graduated from high school there. She received her teaching degree from Valley City Teachers College and later her accounting degree from Moorhead State. Glennice married Russell Houser on November 23, 1956 in Moorhead, MN. They made their home in West Fargo where she worked in the cafeteria at the West Fargo Public Schools. Russ was killed in a truck accident in 1981. Glennice married Gerald Baumgartner on Dec. 7, 1985 in West Fargo. They traveled with Jerry’s employment as a heavy equipment operator and spent much time in Utah and Nevada where she worked as a tax preparer. Upon his retirement in the early 2000’s, they returned to West Fargo. Jerry recently passed away on Dec. 6, 2013.

Sarah Elizabeth (Hunstad) Britten, 55, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Nov. 22, 2013, at home in West Valley City, Utah.

She was born June 13, 1958, in Grenora, N.D., to Rev. Wallace and Margaret Hunstad. The family moved to Green Bay, Wis., in 1959, and Chetek, Wis., in 1965. Sarah graduated from Barron High School in 1978 and attended technical school. She married Bernard Britten in 1986; they later divorced.

Margaret F. Stola, Grand Forks, died Thursday, November 28, 2013 in Valley Memorial Homes Eldercare Center, Grand Forks.

Margaret Florence Behnke, the daughter of Henry and Susie (Owen) Behnke was born February 21, 1916 at Wonewoc, Wisconsin. She was baptized at the Lutheran church there and confirmed in the Lutheran faith at Shelly, Minnesota.

Ann Loh
Ann Loh, age 94, of Valley City succumbed to endometrial and abdominal cancer on Nov. 29, 2013 at her home. A Memorial Mass will be celebrated 11 am Wednesday Dec. 4th at St. Catherine's Catholic Church in Valley City with Msgr. Dennis Skonseng celebrant. Visitation will be from 6:30 to 7:30 pm Tuesday at the Lerud-Schuldt Funeral Home with a Prayer Service beginning at 7:30 pm. Burial will be in St. Catherine's Cemetery.

Ann was born Nov. 15, 1919 in Gladstone, ND to Peter and Anna (Bayer) Simon. She married John Loh in Thompson, ND on Nov. 15, 1938. Ann and John lived in Dickinson, ND and Aberdeen, SD before making their home in Valley City, ND in 1957. While living in Valley City Ann successfully completed the Dale Carnegie Course in 1959 and went on to be a Graduate Assistant in 1960. She also took courses at Valley City State University.

Kathy Hertz, 59, of Bismarck, ND and recently of Fargo, died on Saturday, November 30, 2013 at Sanford Health Palliative Care in Fargo, North Dakota after a 3 ½ year battle with ovarian cancer.

Kathleen Lee Shephard was born in Fargo on July 31, 1954, the daughter of Robert and Patricia (Brunelle) Shephard. She graduated from Bismarck High School in 1972 and Bismarck Junior College in 1974. In 2002, she was fortunate enough to marry her true love and soul mate, Don Hertz.

Rienhold William Saar
Rienhold William Saar was born on July 15, 1916 near Portal ND, the son of Herman and Othelia (Schilke) Saar. He attended school in Leonard and later farmed with his brothers. During his years of farming he raised small grains and row crops and was very proud of his Hereford Cattle herd.

He entered the U.S. Army on January 3rd, 1943, and served in the 8th Armed Infantry Battalion. He was awarded the Overseas Service Bar, the Service Stripe American Campaign Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Bronze Battle Star, the Good Conduct Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal, and he was honorably discharged on February 12, 1946.

Lucille Malen
Lucille Malen, daughter of Olive (Opheim) and Nils Larson, was born on October 27, 1913, in Hendrum, MN. She married Harold Malen on October 27, 1933. They farmed near Gardner, ND, for many years and moved to Fargo, ND, in 1998. Lucille passed on November 26, 2013, at Bethany on 42nd, Fargo, just one month after celebrating her 100th birthday with family and friends.

Lucille was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. A woman of many talents, she was well known as the "nurse on call" because of her willingness and ability to offer family and friends assistance and support, especially during times of illness, injury and/or crises. Lu taught herself to sing beautifully in both English and Norwegian and responded to countless calls to be a soloist for funerals, church services, ALCW conventions and other special occasions. Lu's family and friends enjoyed listening to her play the organ which she mastered on her own. She was a knitter, a crocheter and a needlework artist who could fill a gallery with the pictures, afghans and sweaters she made.
