Vern Surprenant
Vern was born December 31, 1926 in Terrebonne, MN to John and Josephine (Bougie) Surprenant. He graduated from Lafayette High School in Red Lake Falls in 1945. Vern was united in marriage to Cecile Fournier on October 21, 1952 at St Anthony’s Church in Terrebonne, MN.

He joined the US Army in November 1952 and was honorably discharged in November 1954. Vern then continued the operation of the family farm. He was also employed by the US Postal Service from 1969 until he retired in 1989, always taking the time to visit his patrons along the route. He was a field inspector for the ASCS office and served on the Soil & Water Conservation Board. He was a member of St Anthony’s Catholic Church in Terrebonne until its closing, serving on their Parish Council and Cemetery Board. After St. Anthony’s closed he became a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Red Lake Falls. He was very devoted to his Catholic faith. Vern was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the American Legion. He took great pride in the care of his yard devoting many hours. He also enjoyed traveling to visit with his family and friends. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, loving all the time that he spent with his grandchildren.

Honorable Judge Mildred D. Ramynke
Funeral Service for the Honorable Judge Mildred D. Ramynke, 96 of Peever, South Dakota will be held on Monday, September 16, 2013 at 10:30 A.M. at Peever Lutheran Church, Peever, SD with the Rev. Sheila Pohl. Organist will be Estelle Pearson with special music by Rev. James Reeb. Pallbearers will be Owen Dean German, Dennis Schulz, Everett Schulz, Mike Currence, Kenneth Currence, and Scott Syverson. Interment will be in the Peever Cemetery, Peever, South Dakota with Military Rites by the Otto-Quande-Renville American Legion Post #50 and Fort Sisseton VFW Post #3342. There will be visitation at the Cahill Funeral Home in Sisseton on Sunday, September 15, 2013 from 2:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. with family present from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. There will be visitation on Monday, one hour prior to the Funeral Service at the Church. The Cahill Funeral Chapel, Sisseton, SD is in charge of arrangements.

Mildred DeWolfe Davis was born on February 6, 1917 in Morristown, South Dakota to Harrison and Alta (DeWolfe) Davis. She attended school in Watertown and graduated from Watertown High School. During the summers while she was in college Mildred performed exhibition trick roping with the Whipple Rodeo. She also performed at SDSU Little International in 1936 and at the SD State Fair in 1939. Mildred graduated from USD law School and was admitted to the Bar in 1939 at the age of 22. She earned her Commercial Pilots license, Flight Instructors rating, Sea Plane rating and Ground School ratings to teach navigation and meteorology. She taught Army Cadets flight training at Iowa Wesleyan University for two years. She was united in marriage to Clifford Ramynke in Peever on March 2, 1941. She enlisted in the Navy Waves and served from 9/7/1944 until 10/27/1945, the end of World War II as a Meteorologist (Aerographer) 2nd Class in Washington, DC and Key West, FL, and she received the American Campaign Ribbon. After her discharge, she and Clifford returned to Roberts County. They farmed and raised registered cattle near Peever, SD. Three daughters were born to them: Sandra, Gail and Kay. Mildred ran for office as County Judge for Roberts County and was elected in 1958. She served as County and District Judge until 1974 and was then elected Circuit Judge until retirement in 1985. From the time of her first election as judge in 1958 until her retirement in 1985, she was the first and only woman judge in South Dakota. From 1982 until 1985 she was Presiding Judge of the 5th Judicial Circuit. She received the McKusic Award at the State Bar meeting in Sioux Falls, SD in 2006. She was honored by the Law Review Committee at the USD Law School in 2008 by receiving the dedication of Volume 53 of the law school Law Review. Judge Ramynke's public service consisted of serving on the South Dakota State Criminal Justice Commission, South Dakota State Commission of Juvenile Justice, President of South Dakota Judges Association, Board of Directors of Dakota Plains Legal Services Corporation, and the Board of Directors of Nyoda Council of Girl Scouts.

Eugene D. Jindra
Eugene D. Jindra, 89, of Park Rapids, Minnesota passed away on September 10, 2013 at Heritage Manor Living Center in Park Rapids. He was born May 8, 1924 in Onamia, Minnesota to James and Gladys (Ablard) Jindra. Gene served his country in the United States Marine Corps in the Pacific Theater in WWII from 1942 until 1945. He married Isabelle Klein in Onamia in 1952. For the next thirty years Gene had a career as a Minnesota State Trooper, attending school for the state patrol in 1952 and beginning his tenure in Walker, Minnesota, followed by Brainerd and then as the first state trooper stationed in Park Rapids. Gene worked as a Hubbard County deputy until retiring in 1990.

He loved hunting, fishing and trapping in younger years and sports of all varieties from youth to professional. He was fond of yellow roses and bagpipe music. Gene was so proud of his grandchildren’s endeavors; their gifts for the arts and music, photography and drawing; their love of hockey and baseball.
