Gilman H. Goplen, 96 of Cooperstown, ND, formerly of Hannaford, ND, passed away June 8, 2013 at Griggs County Care Center in Cooperstown, ND.
Gilman was born November 12, 1916 on the family farm near Hannaford, ND, the son of John and Anne (Odegaard) Goplen. He attended rural school in Greenfield Township and he graduated from Hannaford High School in 1933.

Harold A. Bonawitz, 89, of Fargo, ND, died on Friday, June 7, 2013, in Essentia Medical Center, Fargo, ND. Harold was born November 13, 1923, in Greenbush, MN, to Raymond and Agnes (Nelson) Bonawitz. He grew up and attended school in Fargo, ND. In 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and served in the Pacific Theatre during WWII. Harold married Joyce Voldness on August 28, 1949, in Thief River Falls, MN. Together they lived in Fargo for a time before settling in Moorhead. For 36 years, Harold worked as a driver and a salesman for Dwyer Beverage Co., and Hansen Distributing. As a young man Harold raised pigeons and later enjoyed working in his yard and flower gardens and took up golf in his retirement years. He enjoyed attending Bison football games and had season tickets for the FM Redhawks for 10 years. Harold was a member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church, the VFW and the Fraternal Order of Eagles in Fargo.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Joyce; daughters, Nancy (Larry) Erickson of Moorhead, MN, Pamela (Don) Blaeser of Fertile, MN; grandchildren, Jodi (Adam) Sorenson of Austin, TX, Eric (Ambra Markos) Odness of Brooklyn, NY, Emily Blaeser of Fertile, MN, Misty (Brandon) Hanson of Elk River, MN, Tara (Kris) Lofstrom of Fargo, ND; great-grandchildren, Alyssa, Kailey, Nicholas, Ashlyn, Trystan and Sven; sister, Betty (Wallace) Grund; and 10 nieces and nephews.

Edwin (Ed) Griffin Clapp Jr. (COL US Army. Retired)
Edwin (Ed) Griffin Clapp Jr. (COL US Army. Retired) was born at his family’s home on 7th Street in Fargo, ND, on June 4, 1918, to Edwin Griffin Clapp Sr. and Jean Hanna Clapp. He passed away Friday afternoon, June 7, 2013, at Villa Maria in Fargo at the age of 95.
Ed’s father was a real estate manager in Fargo, and his mother was an accomplished and active member of Fargo society. His maternal grandfather, Louis B. Hanna, served as North Dakota’s representative to the US Congress and as governor of North Dakota. Ed graduated from high school in Fargo and attended the United States Military Academy at West Point, graduating in 1942. He served in the European theater during World War II. While in Germany after the war, he met and married Geraldine Hazel Sheffield (Gerry) on Christmas Day in 1946. Gerry was serving at that time as a civilian staff attorney in the Judge Advocate General’s Office of the Third Army. Ed remained in the US Army for nearly 25 years, serving in the Korean War and several posts in the United States and Europe, including Manhattan, Kansas, where he earned a MBA at Kansas State University and the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. His final assignment was at North Dakota State University in Fargo, where he led the Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. He retired in 1966 and embarked on a second career as a businessman and land developer in Fargo. Among his many initiatives were the founding of Union State Bank, the creation of an art center on the bridge between Fargo and Moorhead at 2nd Avenue North, the Bluemont Lakes development - a garden spot in Fargo – and the Ed Clapp Park and Senior Citizen Center. All of these were innovative and creative ideas that left an imprint on our community. He also served as president of the Fargo Chamber of Commerce, president of the Fargo Rotary, and a member of the city planning commission. In Ed and Gerry’s later years, they traveled extensively and spent their summers at Lake Melissa near Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, and winters in Sun City, Arizona. Ed became an avid golfer, which he greatly enjoyed playing with his friends and family.

Bernyce A. “Bunny” Lee, 88 of Fargo, passed away following a brief illness in her home on Saturday, June 8, 2013, surrounded by family and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Bunny was born in LaMoure, ND, on April 15, 1925, to Albert and Corrine (Johnson) Kale. She was united in marriage to James E. Slayton in 1944. They had three daughters, Judy, Jill and Bobbi. Bunny married George L. Hill in 1955 and they had three children, Dave, Deb and Ron. George died in 1976. Bunny married Richard (Dick) D. Lee in 1977. They were married for 35 years until his death in October 2012.

He was a superior athlete and lettered in four sports while in high school. Allen was a tank driver in Germany for the US Army during World War II and returned to this country on the same ship carrying the surviving members of the Glenn Miller Band.

Harlan L. Carlson, Sr., 74 son of Charles and Nellie (Roehr) Carlson was born on November 27, 1938 at Jud, N.D. During his lifetime he worked as a master auto mechanic and construction worker. He retired in 2000 and passed away peacefully after a brief illness on May 20, 2013 in Kansas City, MO. he is survived by sons: Harlan (Marsha) Carlson, Jr. of Danville, CA; Curt (Kristie) Carlson of Pleasanton, CA; and Greg Carlson of Kansas City, MO; daughters Julie (Gary) Wagner of Concord, CA and Lisa (Andy) Harding of Dublin, CA; eleven grandchildren and five great grandchildren; brothers Leslie (Chris), James (Murhel), Keith (Jan) and Calvin (Locki) Carlson; sisters LaVerne Carlson and Marjorie (Ruben) Romero; sister-in-laws Beatrice Carlson and Carol Burnside. He wa preceded in death by his parents, brothers Clifford, Arvid and infant brother, Merritt Carlson; sister Marie Walraven and grandson Colton Carlton.
