Letter: Flood plain violated
‘Natural flood plain” is a phrase that has been getting attention recently. Flood plains serve as natural flood protection. When a river is allowed to spread out it reduces the height of flood for everyone. Conversely, when a flood plain is eliminated by development, the river level naturally rises in the main stem, affecting everyone in the basin.

Dorothy Klosterman, 90, Breckenridge, MN, formerly of Mooreton, ND, passed away on Thursday, December 20, 2012 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, MN. Funeral Mass will be on Thursday, December 27, at 11:00 AM at St. Anthony's Catholic Church, Mooreton, ND with Father Peter Anderl as celebrant. Visitation will be one hour before the service at the church. There will be a Christian Mother's Rosary said at 10:30 AM the day of the service at the church. Interment will be at St. Anthony's Catholic Cemetery, Mooreton. Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, ND.

Dorothy Angeline was born on September 3, 1922 to Albert and Hedwig (Veit) Henkenius near Mooreton, ND in Antelope Township. She attended school at the Mooreton Parochial School and Antelope Consolidated School and graduated from Wahpeton High School. She went on to receive her teacher's certificate from Valley City State Teacher's College. Dorothy taught school for seven years and served as substitute for fifteen years.

Vione "Vi" Erickson, 82, formerly of Wyndmere, ND died on Saturday December 15, 2012 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, MN. The Funeral Service will be Wednesday, December 19, 2012 at 1:30 PM at Wyndmere Lutheran Church, Wyndmere, ND, with Rev. Bob Caranicas officiating. Visitation will be Tuesday, from 5 PM to 8 PM with a 7 PM Prayer Service at Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton, and one hour before the service at the church. Interment will be at Elk Creek Cemetery, Wyndmere, ND.

Murl L. Smith
Murl L. Smith, 97, Breckenridge, MN died on Sunday, December 9, 2012 at the St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, MN.

Murl LaVerne Smith was born on May 9, 1915 in Aneta, North Dakota to Carl and Mabel (Saxrud) Fodness. She attended local schools and graduated from the University of North Dakota in 1936 with a Bachelor Degree in Physical Education. She taught at Ellendale Industrial School, Ellendale, ND for 5 years. She went on to do further graduate work at the University of Southern California. Murl entered the United States Army Corp (WAC) on July 9, 1942. She attained the rank of Captain and served as Company Commander at Bolling Field, Washington, D.C., Company Commander at Eglin Air Field, Florida and Administrative Aide to General Curtis in England and France. While serving in England, Murl met her future husband, Bryce B. Smith who came to General Curtis's office to interview. On March 8, 1945 they were married in St. Germaine, Paris, France. After the war the couple lived in Atlanta, GA for a time before moving to Jamestown, ND where Bryce worked with an auto dealership. In 1960 they moved to Wahpeton, North Dakota and founded the Smith Motors Dealership; previously the Jack Reed Chevrolet Co. Bryce passed away August 21, 1999; Murl continued to live in the Wahpeton-Breckenridge communities.
