DuWayne Francis Lein
DuWayne F. Lein was born in Fargo, ND, August 17, 1922. He graduated from Fargo Central High School in 1941. DuWayne enlisted in the Army and was a radio operator/technician. He served with the 36th Cavalry Reconnaissance Troop in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theatre. He was honorably discharged in 1945. DuWayne met Esther Howe at the Red Owl grocery store. They were married for 53 year, and raised two children.

In 1952, DuWayne began working with Dutch Maid Dairy as a delivery man. He worked there 27 years until his retirement. He then worked as a custodian for the Fargo Public Schools for 7 years.

Lillian I. Fallett, 99, Moorhead, Minnesota died Sunday, July 28, 2013 at Eventide Heritage Village. Lillian was born on December 20 1913, Erskine, Minnesota the daughter of Peter and Lisa Myhr. She was baptized from Gosen Lutheran Church rural Erskine on February 1, 1914 and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church of Erskine on July 8, 1928. She attended Schools in Erskine graduating on June 3, 1932.

Lillian married Lyle Fallett on February 4, 1939 in Moorhead, Minnesota. They owned and operated “The Waffle Shop” in downtown Moorhead for 23 years from 1946 to 1969. She then worked at St. Luke’s Hospital as a telephone operator until retiring in 1979.

Gwen was born November 29, 1924 in Barnesville, MN to Hazel (Emerson) Rogers and Earl E. Rogers. She attended school and graduated from Barnesville High School in 1942. She married Virgil Howard Blankenship on April 23, 1943 in Barnesville. They farmed in Prairie View Township where they raised their five children. Gwen was a member of St. James United Church of Christ in Barnesville.

Virgil and Gwen loved dancing, getting together with friends and traveling. They were in a car accident in October 1977 that changed their lives forever. Because of his injuries, Virgil was now a quadriplegic. They eventually moved to Mesa, AZ where Gwen was his constant caregiver and gave unselfishly the next 28 years.

Bertha Lenora Otteson, 98, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Wolverton, MN, died Monday, July 22, 2013, in Eventide Lutheran Home. Bertha was born to Ole and Josephine (Prevost) Otteson on April 22, 1915, the youngest of ten children. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings, Sena Opoien, Olga Stevenson, Annie Ness, Walter Otteson, William Otteson, Winnie Miller, Elizabeth Stockwell, Arnold Otteson and Bert Otteson.

Bertha spent her life just northeast of Wolverton on the farm where she was born, eventually becoming the caregiver for her parents. She and her two youngest brothers became farm operators. She was active in both church and community.

Gene J. Lund died at Eventide Lutheran Home in Moorhead, MN on July 27, 2013. He was born October 3, 1921 at the home of his parents, Reuben and Meta (Ebert) Lund in Lafayette, MN. He was baptized November 3, 1921 and confirmed on March 15, 1936 at First Lutheran Church, Lafayette. Gene married Louise Ekstam in Laurens, Iowa on October 14, 1951.

Gene excelled in academics and athletics at New Ulm High School in New Ulm, MN, graduating in 1939. He finished Gustavus Adolphus College cum laude in January of 1943, and entered Augustana Lutheran Seminary, Rock Island, IL, that autumn. He and his seminary classmates were ordained together on June 16, 1946 at Duluth, MN.

She was born December 21, 1925 in Fargo, ND to Emil and Philomena (Coster) Matthys. She graduated from Sacred Heart Academy in Fargo in 1943 and then attended Business School for two years. On October 24, 1946, after World War II, she married Earl Joseph Quiggle at St. Anthony’s Church in Fargo. They moved to Vergas, MN where they farmed. In 1963, they moved to Moorhead, MN where they raised their family. Virginia worked as a legal secretary for many years until her retirement. She enjoyed gardening, crocheting, Brazilian embroidery, and reading. Virginia was a member of the VFW, the Stitching Club, and was a devoted Catholic.

Ethel I. Quiggle
Ethel Irene Quiggle, 90, of Moorhead, MN passed into eternal life July 22, 2013. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be held 10:30 a.m., Thursday, July 25 (her birthday) at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moorhead, with one hour visitation prior to the service. Burial will be at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, Moorhead, where she will be laid to rest next to her parents. She was born July 25, 1922 to Walter and Elgie (Blankenship) Quiggle at Baker, MN and later moved with her family to rural Glyndon, MN. During WW II Ethel moved to Hermosa Beach, California with her sisters . She helped care for her nieces and nephews, worked at a restaurant, did housekeeping, and then began her lifetime work at the Little Company of Mary Catholic Hospital in Torrance. She enjoyed her small apartment and walked a mile or so most days to work and often to her church. Holidays were spent with her sisters and their families; she enjoyed many overnight visits with her niece, Jennifer Mukai, cousin JoAnn Hudspeth, and other relatives. Ethel was a longtime parishioner of St. James Catholic Church in Redondo Beach, CA. One of her favorite trips was an Alaskan cruise with her friend, Olive Moore. She enjoyed visits to Reno, NV to visit her brother Gerald and family, and also to Minnesota to see family. After her retirement from the hospital, she moved to Santa Maria, CA to live near her sister, Lois. Later she moved to Moorhead, MN and settled at Eventide at Fairmont where her sister Betty lived. Ethel loved to walk, going to her bank, the Center Mall, beauty shop, the post office, and other stores. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Moorhead. In 2009 she moved to Eventide at Eighth, Moorhead, where she resided until her death. Ethel was preceded in death by her parents, brothers and sisters-in-law, Grant & Elaine and Gerald & June Quiggle, an infant brother, Robert; three sisters and brothers-in-law, Rachel & John Smithwick, Charlotte & Mal Stromme, and Betty & Steve Henderson; brother-in-law, Herman Poltl; and a dear cousin, Phyllis Beckett. She is survived by one sister, Lois Poltl, Santa Maria, CA and her children, Mike, Susan, Randy, Jim, Tim, Terri, all of Calif; other nieces and nephews, Joan Smithwick, Jan (Fred) Hammer, Dennis (JoAnn) Smithwick, Marlys (Ed) Mulcahy, all from the Fargo-Moorhead and surrounding area; Darryl (Cleo) Smithwick, Mary (Jim) Dahlen, all from MN; Dan (Faye) Smithwick, FL; Dave (Cindy) Smithwick, AZ; Jen (Tad) Mukai, CA; Pat (B.J.)
