Margaret E. Medd, 91, of Grand Forks, ND died Saturday, November 2, 2013 in Valley Eldercare Center, Grand Forks.

Margaret Elaine Hall was born the daughter of Wilbur and Bessie (Williams) Hall on December 23, 1921 in Souris, ND. She graduated from Sherwood, ND High School and attended North Dakota Agricultural College and graduated from Dakota Business College. On August 22, 1943, Margaret married Raymond Charles Medd in Fargo, ND. Margaret and Ray lived in Crawford, NE while Ray was stationed at Fort Robinson. After WWII, they settled in Oakes, ND where they owned the Norway Spur Grain Company. After Ray died in 1968, Margaret returned to school and graduated from NDSU with a degree in early childhood education and special education. Margaret helped hundreds of children during her career in Oakes, Valley City, and Bottineau. She believed that every child deserved the best education possible. For her work, Margaret was named the North Dakota Outstanding Special Educator. In 2008 Margaret moved to Grand Forks to be closer to her family. Margaret was a lifelong member of the P.E.O. She was a member of the United Parish in Bottineau. She enjoyed traveling, her home at Lake Metigoshe and being a grandma and great-grandma.

Dorothy J. Hughes, 95, Moorhead, MN, passed away very peacefully on Wednesday, October 30, 2013, surrounded by her family, in Eventide on 8th, Moorhead.

Dorothy Jane Long was born on February 1, 1918, to Mary and Edward Long, in Moorhead. She attended Moorhead High School and, shortly thereafter, married Daniel Hughes on June 1, 1937. Dorothy stayed at home with her children for many years before working as a Lunch Lady at St. Joseph School, Moorhead. She always made sure you knew she never missed a day of work her whole time there.

David A. Offerdahl, age 69, Casselton, ND, died Wednesday, October 30, 2013, at Luther Memorial Home, Mayville, ND, after a fourteen-year struggle with frontal temporal dementia.

David was born May 19, 1944, the son of Oscar and Lillie (Smestad) Offerdahl at Northwood, ND. On August 22, 1969, David married Pamela Bakkum at Mayville, ND. They were blessed with two sons, Corey and Brent.

Alvin (Al) F. Soukup
Alvin F. Soukup, 85, of Fargo passed away in the early morning hours of October 30, 2013 at home in Fargo after a short battle with lung cancer.

Soukup was born October 4, 1928 on a farm near Lankin in Walsh County, North Dakota, to Edward and Margaret Soukup. He attended Lankin High School and after graduation enlisted in the United States Air Force where he served in Japan as a ground crew chief for a B-29 during the Korean War. After completion of his service overseas, he was a member of the North Dakota Air National Guard for six years.

Lonnie J. Hendrickson
Lonnie Jay Hendrickson was born April 26, 1963, in Moorhead, MN, to Jerome and Kathie (Hughes) Hendrickson. He passed away, Monday, October 28, 2013, to enter into a peaceful place at the hands of our Savior Jesus. Lonnie is now free of the painful effects of his diabetes and many health problems from which he suffered.

Lonnie attended grade school at St. Anthony School in Fargo, ND. He worked for Swanson Construction, Fargo, and also worked and lived in Alaska. He loved fishing, especially while in Alaska. His last job was at The Pallet Company, Fargo, until he was unable to work anymore.

Elvera Rose MacMonagle was born November 13, 1932 in White Earth, ND, the daughter of the late John H. and Christine (Fuehrer) MacMonagle. She is survived by her siblings: Bonnie Gunderson, Dwight MacMonagle, Cleo Lee and Kathy Nielsen. She was preceded by her parents, one sister and three brothers.

Oh my God. No Cass County Coroner’s Office? I was sick to my stomach after reading the Oct. 20 article. Kristie Ross, you are way above being a hero, and I’m sure it is not in your job description to open up your family home and use your family car because there is no place to put the bodies.

Grace Ellen Kaiser
Grace Ellen Kaiser, 90, Monango, ND died October 23, 2013 at Avera St. Lukes Hospital, Aberdeen. Grace was born July 19, 1923 in Ottawa County, Kansas to Ernest and Ida (Geist) Phelps. Grace graduated from Miltonvale High School in 1941. On June 20, 1941 she married Elmo Kaiser. They farmed in Kansas until March of 1951 when they pursued their dream of farming and ranching in North Dakota. They purchased their ranch in Whitestone Township where Grace and Elmo raised five sons, Charles (Ray), Robert (Bob), Frank, John and James (Jim). Grace continued to reside at Kaiser Ranch until her death.

With her wonderful cooking and generosity to all, Grace was the host of every large family gathering. She enjoyed gardening, canning, working beside Elmo on the farm, listening to country music, reading, family visits to Kansas and most of all spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will be remembered always for her presence at every important family event, her patience, humor, loyalty, determination and words of wisdom. Her positive outlook and concern left everyone around her feeling uniquely valued.

LaVerne Bertha Marie Bladow, 86 of Wahpeton, ND passed away Friday, October 25, 2013 at St. Gerard’s Community of Care, Hankinson, ND. Funeral service will be Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at 10:00 a.m. at Emmanuel United Church of Christ, Hankinson with Rev. Ken Adams officiating. Burial will be at United Cemetery, Hankinson. Visitation will be Monday October 28, 2013 from 5:00 -7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 7:00 p.m. at the Frank Family Funeral Home, Hankinson. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church on Tuesday. Pallbearers are: Randy Evans, Chris Bladow, Shane Bladow, Casey Bladow, Ryan Olson & Kyle Puetz. Special music by JoAnn Kuehl.

LaVerne Bertha Marie Bladow was born July 26, 1927 in Elma Township, rural Hankinson, ND, the daughter of Theodore & Esther (Vedder) Roeder. She attended country schools and worked for different families in the Hankinson area. On June 10, 1948 she was united in marriage to Milton Bladow at Union Congregational Church, Hankinson. After their marriage they moved to California and returned to the farm near Hankinson in March of 1949. In the fall of 1979 they moved to Wahpeton where they have lived since. LaVerne & Milton celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in June 2013.

Doris June Rachow
Doris Rachow passed away on Tuesday, October 22, 2013, at the Sanford Medical Center Nursing Home, Hillsboro, at the age of 78.

Doris June Drees was born January 8, 1935, in Grand Forks, ND. She was the daughter of Albert,Sr. and Ethel Drees. Doris was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Grand Forks. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School. Doris June Drees was united in marriage to Harold “Dick” Rachow on August 30, 1953 in Grand Forks. They made their home near Hillsboro where they farmed. Besides helping on the farm, she worked at the Hunter Bag Factory and later at the Hillsboro Beet Plant. In 1977, Harold retired from farming and they moved into Hillsboro. Harold passed away in 2005. Doris was very involved in the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League at St. John Lutheran Church. She enjoyed playing cards at the golf course, quilting at the church and loved baking for her grandchildren.

Edward E. Fennern
Edward E. Fennern, known by many as “Pete” was born August 4, 1933, in Bismarck, ND, the son of Emil and Martha (Kielhorn) Fennern. As a young child, Pete’s family moved to his parent’s farm south of Twin Valley, MN. Following his schooling, Pete farmed the home place for many years. He raised small grains of wheat and oats.

On May 23, 1964, Pete was united in marriage to Mary Ann Orwald. The couple made their home in Twin Valley, a place they would call home for nearly 50 years. Over those years, Pete was employed by Abbott Arne and Schwindt for a time before working as a large dump truck operator for Reserve Mining in Babbitt, MN. After the closing of Reserve Mining, Pete began working at KBI in Twin Valley until his retirement. In the fall of 2012, Pete and Mary Ann moved to Bridges Care Community in Ada. Pete died Sunday, October 20, 2013, at the Benedictine Care Community at the age of 80.

The funeral for Barbara P. Sandness, LaMoure, ND, will be Wednesday, October 23, 2013 at 10:30 a.m. at Zoar Lutheran Church in LaMoure. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday, October 22, 2013 from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service to follow.

Barbara Ellen Potts, daughter of Grover and Grace Potts was born November 12, 1927, at Mobridge, SD. She grew up and graduated from LaMoure High School in LaMoure, ND and was united in marriage to Claire Sandness on June 23, 1946. The couple farmed near LaMoure for 50 years before retiring and moving to town. Barbara was a member of Zoar Lutheran Church where she was active in WELCA, Bible study, and quilting. Barbara passed away at St Rose Care Center on Saturday, October 19, 2013.

George Fredrick Pearson, 80, Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, passed away on Friday, October 18, 2013 at Frazee Care Center, surrounded by his loving family.

George was born on April 1, 1933 to John and Katherine(Gaab) Pearson in Moorhead, Minnesota. He grew up in Moorhead and graduated from Moorhead High School in 1951. George received a Bachelor of Science Degree of Education in Industrial Arts, Math and Science at Moorhead State Teacher's College, Moorhead, Minnesota. He met the love of his life, Edna Mae Olson, while at college and they were married in Hawley, Minnesota on June 16, 1955.
