JAMESTOWN, N.D. – Playing down a man for any length of time is a tough task, but that’s what the Minot boys soccer team had to do Thursday. The Magicians played nearly 30 minutes shorthanded because of a red card foul, but still managed to pull off a 3-2 overtime win over Fargo Shanley during the quarterfinals of the North Dakota state boys soccer tournament at Rotary Field.

Melvin James Smith
1931 ~ 2013

Melvin passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2013, from complications of Alzheimer's and pneumonia. He was born in Alice, North Dakota to Harry and Lucille (Scott) Smith. After graduating from Wheatland High School, he joined the Marines and honorably served for three years. Upon discharge, he returned to the family farm to work and to attend business school. In 1955, he married Marilyn Smeby of Hickson; together they moved to San Diego, CA and had two daughters. Marilyn passed away in 1971.

Arliene May Mattson
Arliene May Mattson, 79 of Lidgerwood, ND, passed away Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton, ND. Funeral mass will be Monday, October 7, 2013 at 11:00 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood with Fr. Robert Smith as celebrant. Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery, Lidgerwood. Visitation will be Sunday, October 6, 2013 from 4-6 pm with a prayer service at 6pm all at St. Boniface Church. There will also be visitation one hour prior to the service at the church. Pallbearers are: Cody Mattson, Travis Thomas, Scott Wisted, Todd Mattson, Ryan Grohnke, Eric Grohnke, Marty Swant, Zach Mattson, Connor Mattson & Henry Mattson. Honorary pallbearers are all her friends & relatives. Organist will be Connie Baker with special music by Kathy Skroch.

Arliene May was born May 16, 1934 at Fairmount, ND, the daughter of Arnold & Clara (Crooks) Moeller. She grew up on a farm near Fairmount and in 1941 they moved to Lidgerwood, ND where she attended Lidgerwood Public School. On February 1, 1950 she was united in marriage to Arnold Mattson at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Lidgerwood. Arliene worked several jobs, including Mattson’s Café, Popp Plastic Binding Co., a teacher’s aide at Lidgerwood Public School, Dakota Magic Casino & many years at the Lidgerwood Bakery.

KINDRED, N.D. – Fargo Shanley spread the rushing wealth Friday night, and Deacons head coach Rod Oksendahl is fine with that. Danny Stasch and Tre Fort each rushed for two touchdowns to spark No. 3-ranked Shanley to a 42-6 victory against Kindred in North Dakota Class 2A, East Region football at Jerlow Field.
