Richard W. Jacobs
Richard W. Jacobs, 88, Dubuque, Iowa, and formerly from West Fargo and Hazen, North Dakota, died December 27, 2012, at his daughter’s home in Dubuque. Service and internment will be held in Hazen, ND, in June.

Richard was born October 15, 1924, in Golva, ND, the son of Ralph and Florence Jacobs. Travel was the norm in his early life since his family moved many times following his father’s work managing many of the grain elevators in rural North Dakota. Dick called Hazen, ND, home, as he attended high school there until entering the US Marine Corps. After honorably serving his country in the South Pacific during WWII, he returned to Hazen and married Shirley Ann Retterath on May 1, 1946. Dick held numerous jobs as he and Shirley began their life together. He owned and operated a gas station in Hazen and drove truck during the construction of the Garrison Dam. They moved to Bismarck when he began working for Western Area Power Administration, eventually retiring as a Lead Lineman stationed out of West Fargo. Richard enjoyed family, friends and the outdoors, and when all three of these were involved he was the happiest. His children and grandchildren will remember him the most for being an inspiration to his family in everything he did and for his great sense of humor.
