Who's picking you up? Fargo police not fully enforcing ordinance regulating cab drivers
FARGO – Police here aren’t fully enforcing a decades-old city ordinance that regulates taxicab drivers, allowing at least two convicted felons to obtain licenses before they were eligible and resulting in more than 50 cases since 2008 in which a cabbie’s license should have been revoked or suspended because of multiple traffic violations, a Forum investigation found.

Cities in region all have different takes on cabbie licensing
FARGO – Rules for obtaining a taxicab driver’s license vary among area cities of similar size to Fargo, with some being more stringent and others looser, but police always play a role in the process. The Sioux Falls (S.D.) Police Department conducts background checks on cabbie license applicants, but only for traffic and criminal records in South Dakota, said Officer Sam Clemens, a department spokesman.

West Fargo - A slight fog calmly creeps over the track at the Red River Valley Speedway as it sits quietly in the rain. It was almost as if the exhaust from races past was unable to let go. Lights point toward an empty track, and speakers aim at empty grandstands.

William “Bill” Lopez
With support from Hospice of the Red River Valley, William “Bill” Lopez, 57, died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on May 2nd, 2013, after a valiant battle against cancer.

Bill was born and raised in Indiana and moved to Moorhead, MN the fall of 1973 to attend Moorhead State University. His love for athletics and academics led him to play baseball while studying Social Work and Criminal Justice. He was later the recipient of the “Outstanding Young Alumni” award.

Veronica Sommerfeld
Veronica Sommerfeld, 72, passed away on April 16, 2013 at her home in California surrounded by her family and friends after a courageous fight with pancreatic cancer for almost one year.

Veronica was born on January 5, 1941 in Alice, ND to Ferdinand and Selma Mikula. Veronica married the love of her life, Jerome Sommerfeld on February 14, 1956 in Alice at St. Henry's Church. They lived on the Sommerfeld farm, east of Alice, until moving to Riverside California in 1962.

Myrtle V. Kuehn, 97, died at Sanford Palliative Care on Wednesday, May 1, 2013 from complications from a stroke. She was a loving mother and mother-in-law, and will be deeply missed.

Myrtle Victoria Barsness was born on December 30, 1915 to Carl and Betsy (Lerdahl) Barsness, in Cyrus, MN. She grew up in Cyress and attended school through the 11th grade. Myrtle married Ervin L. Kuehn on May 12, 1940 in Cyress. They had two sons, Gerald (Jerry) and James.
