Circuses, carnivals, 'Wild West' shows featured N.D. natives
A number of interesting individuals who lived in North Dakota found employment in various circuses, “Wild West” shows, and carnivals. In 1922, Hans Langseth, a farmer in Richland County, N.D., was judged to have the world’s longest beard, which measured 17 feet 4 inches. For a short time, he was showcased in the Ringling Brothers Circus, but quit to return to his farm and real estate business.

The funeral service for Margaret L. Bubach, 98, Fargo, ND, formerly of Litchville, ND, will be 2:00 p.m., Sunday, July 14, 2013 at Trinity Lutheran Church, rural Litchville. Burial will be in the Trinity Lutheran Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at the Oliver-Nathan Funeral Chapel, Valley City, ND and will continue an hour prior to the service at the church Sunday afternoon.

Orlen Bjorland
Orlen Bjorland, 83, Jamestown, ND, died Saturday, July 6, 2013 at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

Orlen Thomas Bjorland was born June 4, 1930 on the family farm near Weaver, ND, the son of Peter and Clara (Thorson) Bjorland. He was raised in Bagley, MN and attended the rural school near Hampton, ND and later the rural school near Bagley, MN. Following his schooling, he moved to Fargo, ND, where he worked as a truck driver for Northrup-King for 2 years and for Northern Transit as a Fargo City Bus Driver for 5 years. On April 19, 1950, he married Shirley Peerboom at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Anamoose, ND, and they settled in Fargo, ND where Orlen began working as a truck driver for Hart Motor Express, a job he continued for 30 years. In 1952, they moved to Dilworth, MN and in 1973, moved to Jamestown, ND. Orlen also drove tour bus for 10 years. In 1992, they moved to Edgeley, ND and Orlen worked as a driver for LaMoure County Transit and for Lisko Funeral Chapel.

Arlene L. Peterson
Arlene L. Peterson, 86, formerly of Verona, ND, passed away June 25, 2013 at the Oakes Good Samaritan Society. Arlene Louise Weinandt, daughter of Leo and Elizabeth (Brockling) Weinandt was born July 17, 1926 in Lakefield, MN. She grew up on their 80 acre farm with her four sisters and graduated from Okabena High School in 1943. She worked at a bank in Minneapolis for a short time until her parents purchased a farm near Verona, ND in 1945. She and her sisters worked hard helping her parents move their farming business there.

Arlene began working as a telephone operator in Oakes. She met her future husband, Clifford Peterson from Verona, at a dance. They were married on November 5, 1949 at St. Raphael's Catholic Church, Verona. It was a double ceremony alongside her youngest sister, Ruth and her husband Bob Gaughan. Clifford and Arlene had five sons and five daughters all of whom together were the pride of the farm, caring for animals, fulfilling household chores and harvesting crops. Arlene's beloved husband, Clifford, passed away January 25, 1996 after 46 years of marriage.

Bernyce A "Bunny" Lee
Bernyce A. “Bunny” Lee, 88 of Fargo, passed away following a brief illness in her home on Saturday, June 8, 2013, surrounded by family and under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Bunny was born in LaMoure, ND, on April 15, 1925, to Albert and Corrine (Johnson) Kale. She was united in marriage to James E. Slayton in 1944. They had three daughters, Judy, Jill and Bobbi. Bunny married George L. Hill in 1955 and they had three children, Dave, Deb and Ron. George died in 1976. Bunny married Richard (Dick) D. Lee in 1977. They were married for 35 years until his death in October 2012.

Elsie Heinze Kunze died May 22nd at the Cooperstown Medical Center. Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 AM on Tuesday May 28th at the Assembly of God Church in Dazey, ND with Rev. Brian Skaar officiating. Visitation will be from 5 PM until 7 PM Monday at the Lerud-Schuldt funeral Home with a Prayer Service beginning at 7 PM. Interment will be in the Hannaford Cemetery.

Elsie Marie Jensen was born Feb. 23, 1929 at Cooperstown, ND the daughter of Einar and Jensina Jensen. She attended country schools in the Hannaford and Walum areas before moving with her family to Sibley, ND where she completed school. While growing up there Elsie had a white horse named Silver that was her pride and joy. In April of 1945 she was married to Edward Heinze. A devoted farm wife she milked cows, cleaned, and cooked while raising her family. In 1974 Elsie began her own housekeeping business, Chore Girls. She worked hard and saved her money and took her first trip to Denmark. Her oldest brother Einar was raised in Denmark. He did not come to the United States with the family. This was the first time they had met. Elsie ran her business for over 25 years and at the same time drove school bus for the Luverne School. She moved to Jamestown, ND and married Sylvester Kunze. They moved to Clarkston, WA but Elsie later returned to make her home at Sibley, ND. This past year she had been a resident of the Cooperstown Medical Center.

Anna M. Loe, 85, of Manvel, ND passed away Sunday, May 19, 2013 at her home.

Anna Mae Mangan was born July 4, 1927 at the family farm near Lamoure, ND the daughter of William Edward and Mabel Theresa (Peterson) Mangan. She attended high school in LaMoure and Valley City State College. Anna married Amber Kjell Loe on July 19, 1946 in LaMoure. They lived in Tolna, ND, Michigan, ND, Grand Forks, ND and finally Manvel, ND. She was a American Legion Auxiliary member for 36 consecutive years, a Homemaker member and a 4-H leader for many years. Anna was employed with Century 21 Realty, H &R Block and was a bookkeeper for Farmers Union Oil Company in both Michigan and Grand Forks. She and Amber traveled and spent time with their children and grandchildren scattered across the country. Anna enjoyed bowling, golfing, gardening, hunting, playing Bridge, and Pinochle. Amber preceded her in death on August 27, 2007.

Donald O. Braaten
Donald O. Braaten, 85, formerly of Fargo passed away Thursday, May 16 at Arthur, ND. Donald “Don” was born on May 16, 1928 at Kindred, ND.

He graduated from Kindred High School in 1946 and served in the United States Army from 1946-1948. Upon completion of his military service, Don married Eileen Oveson on December 31, 1949. They lived the majority of their lives in Fargo, ND. Don and Eileen enjoyed golfing and spending time at their lake home on Big Detroit and winter home in Mesa, AZ. Eileen passed away in 2009.

Ronald L. Siedschlag
Ronald L. Siedschlag, age 82, of Hastings, passed away at home on May 7, 2013. He was born in Berlin, ND on July 6, 1930 to Leon and Alice Siedschlag. He graduated from Lamoure High School in 1948 and married Doris Isakson on January 21, 1951 in Lamoure. Ronald worked in sales for 26 years at the Minneapolis Star-Tribune and was a lifelong member of the American Federation of Grain Millers. He was a very active member of St. Philip's Lutheran Church and had given over 20 gallons of his blood to the local Blood Mobile. He loved working in the yard, fishing, and most of all his family.

He was preceded in death by wife, Doris; son, Steven; parents; sisters, Georgine and Elaine; brother, Richard. He is survived by daughter, Beth (Stan) Mattila of Martinsville, Indiana; son, Kent (Cindy) of Redwood Falls; daughter, Lynn (Douglas) Kruger of Rochester; daughter, Gail (Roland) Swanson of River Falls, WI; grandchildren, Keaton (Megan), and Whitney Mattila; Katie Siedschlag; Luke and Amanda Kruger; Benjamin, Steven, Jeffrey (Sam) and Lindsey Swanson; great grandchildren, Hayli; Brodi; and Sydney; and brother, Douglas (Marlene) of Valley City, ND.

Laurie G. Karvonen
Laurie Gary Karvonen was born on June 22, 1947 in Jud, ND, the son of Eino and Doris (Nelson) Karvonen. They lived in Menahga, MN until he was in the 5th grade, at that time, they moved to the Lehr-Gackle, ND area. He attended school in Lehr.

As a young man, Laurie served in the Army National Guard. He moved to Minnesota and worked at Western Gear as a machinist. After moving to Elk River, MN he worked as an independent truck driver. Laurie returned to ND, making his home in Eckelson working in Jamestown at Goodrich as an aeronautics machinist.
