Kovels Antiques: Blankets once status symbol
In the winters of earlier centuries, rooms could become very cold. Heat came only from a fireplace, and a glass of water just 6 feet from the flames could freeze. So blankets, coverlets and quilts were necessities. Only the very rich could import fabrics, most had to use homemade or at least locally made bed covers.

Mike Rosmann: Rutabaga experiment not over till it’s over
More readers responded to “Gardener’s great rutabaga experiment falls flat” than any of my other columns thus far. The article was published earlier this fall. For the first time, I grew rutabagas this year and harvested a good bunch. Every way I cooked them, they smelled up the entire house and tasted strong.

Prairie Fare: Older kids capable of more in kitchen
Mom, you make the greatest cookies in the world! my 9-year-old daughter exclaimed with a dazzling smile. I was flattered by her extreme compliment, but I knew she had ulterior motives. I was packing cookies into containers at the time. She was waiting for samples.

Vilsack urges strategy in political fights
WASHINGTON – In his first major speech since the election, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack on Dec. 6 directly addressed Republican criticism of the Obama administration during the election campaign, and said leaders in rural America need to take on a “new attitude” that replaces “trying to preserve what we’ve got” with “a growth mindset.”

Pet Care: Dog acts aggressive on leash
Dear Dr. Fox: We have an 18-month-old German shepherd/Lab/Akita mix who we adopted from the Humane Society at 5 months old. She is very smart, and I have trained her to have good manners and do many tricks at our house. My main problem is that she acts aggressive and hostile when she cannot get to another dog when on a leash.

Kovels Antiques: Over the years, Santa’s look has changed
Santa Claus has changed in appearance throughout the centuries. At first he was St. Nicolas, a tall thin man with a beard. In 1823, the famous poem The Night Before Christmas was published. It describes a jolly little man who was small enough to slide down a chimney.

Mike Rosmann: Rural residents lack access to health care
In comparison to their urban neighbors, rural residents of the U.S. have a greater need for, but reduced access to health care, especially behavioral health services. By behavioral health services, I mean counseling, prescription of psychotropic medications, addiction treatments and any other professional services aimed at helping people deal with emotional turmoil.

Prairie Fare: Don’t let your holidays become hazardous
I counted dogs one evening when I returned from the grocery store, and I was one short of the three dachshunds we have. Our dog Jake had sneaked out of his area and was on the loose in the house.

Avoid roof collapses from snow on agricultural buildings

Ag producers should do income tax planning before year ends
FARGO - Agricultural producers should do tax planning before the end of the year based on the information known at this time. Traditionally, producers try to do tax planning to limit their tax liability. With uncertainty in Congress, tax rates may be higher in 2013 than 2012. If so, it may be best not to defer as much income to 2013.

Pet Care: Should cats roam free?
Dear Dr. Fox: I was disappointed in your recent response to G.L. in Washington, D.C., the feral cat colony caretaker. Instead of providing him with a link to Alley Cat Allies (alleycat.org), a nonprofit group dedicated to helping cats, you persisted in providing antiquated arguments for the death of cats. The website has an entire section that would have answered G.L.’s questions much better than you did, which was to advocate he euthanize his cats.
