Dilworth woman celebrates 105 years of memories
DILWORTH - Traveling for the holidays in 1913 was a cold affair for Muriel Kaercher. At 5 years old, she and her family used a bobsled to travel from Neche, N.D., less than a mile from the Canadian border, to a gathering at her aunt’s house. Her two grandmas shared a small wood warmer.

It was a former North Dakotan, not Scotty, who “beamed” Capt. James T. Kirk aboard the Starship Enterprise during almost every episode of “Star Trek” in the 1960s – or at least, it was Bowman’s Jim Rugg who created the illusion that Kirk’s body was being reconstituted inside the transformer of the Enterprise.

Mons Ohnstad
Mons Ohnstad had one of the most uniquely positive, yet simple, perspectives and approaches to life that we will ever know. He was a man true to his commitments, a generous, trustworthy man, devoted to family and appreciative of good friends. He was born to Mayme Flora Newton and Mons Klingenberg Ohnstad of Sharon, ND, on October 30, 1923. Mons grew up working in the family's drug store serving malts and sodas and delivering prescriptions around town. His dog, Spike, pulled him to school on a sled during the snowy Sharon winters.

Mons was a natural athlete, short but fast, he would say. He earned many awards as a sprinter and anchor of the relay team. His basketball team won the State Consolidated League Tournament in 1941; Mons was named All State Forward. Following graduation Mons attended the American College of Physical Education in Chicago. He also took classes at Northwestern and was the Assistant Boys' Director at the Garibaldi Settlement House.

Oh, and I forgot to bake the cookies. And never mind the kids all looking cute in matching outfits, and that pre-lit tree – not so much lit anymore!
