Thelma Houglum
Thelma Houglum, 92, Ulen, MN, formerly Waubun, MN, died Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

Thelma Gudrun Otterson was born December 22, 1921, near Syre, MN, to Nicolai and Hilda Otterson. She attended school at Meadowland Country School near Syre, graduated from Twin Valley High School in 1939 and Moorhead State Teachers College in 1941. Following graduation, Thelma taught school at Cheerful Nook Country School near Flom, MN, where she met her husband and life partner, Monroe Houglum. Following their marriage in 1943 they lived a short time in Newport News, VA, where Monroe was stationed with the U.S. Army and Thelma worked at the Point of Embarkation supporting the war effort. In 1946, Thelma and Monroe moved to Waubun where they would live for the next 59 years. During this time Thelma stayed busy raising three sons and a daughter, working with the Cub Scouts as a Den Mother, the American Legion Auxiliary and being very active at Trinity Lutheran Church where she taught Sunday school and worked at many activities and projects both for the church and the Ladies Aid.

Harold Goetz
Harold Goetz was born to Alex and Emma Goetz of Halliday, ND on December 20, 1932 and passed away on January 17, 2014 in Fort Collins, CO. He received his elementary education at a country school but did attend high school in order to help run the family farm. During the Korean War era, he served in the army and received his GED. Following his discharge, he attended junior college in Bottineau, ND, where he met nursing student Lorna Hall, who he married in 1960. He earned his B.S. degree at North Dakota State University (NDSU) in Fargo, ND, was awarded a Fullbright scholarship to study at a university in Hohenheim, Germany, and then returned to NDSU for his Master’s Degree in Botany and Zoology. He later received his Doctorate Degree in Range Management at University of Utah.

During his career years, he served as a teacher, researcher, and administrator who was highly recognized and respected by his colleagues and students. He served as dean and chairman of the Botany/Biology Department, chairman of the Tri-college University Center for Environmental Studies, and was awarded the Doctor of Service Award by the student body while at NDSU. Harold and his family also went to Tehran, Iran for a year where he worked for the United Nations and taught at Tehran University. He later served as the chairman of the Range Science Department at CSU for ten years and retired in 1995.
