Gale Sharp
Gale Sharp, age 64, of Vergas, MN, passed away suddenly at his home on Wednesday, April 14, 2014 with his wife Carol and dogs, Alice and Annie, at his side. He was a husband and friend who was loved by many. A celebration of his life will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, April 21, 2014, at the Vergas Event Center. Burial will take place at Sybil Lake Cemetery, Vergas, MN. Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the Vergas Event Center. Gale was born October 7, 1949, in Northfield, MN to Ervin and Irene Sharp. He was the oldest of four children. Gale grew up and attended school in Frazee, MN. After high school graduation he attended Detroit Lakes Vocational Technical School for carpentry. After which he started his career at Dynamic Homes until he retired in 2005. Gale became a builder and dealer for Dynamic Homes and also started GS Construction Company in which he took great pride in his work.

Verna Marion Ecker, 91, of Grandin, ND passed peacefully Saturday, April 19th 2014, surrounded by her family.

Verna was born December 16, 1922, in Forest River, ND to John "Allen" and Gladys "Dollie" (Dunlop) Sampel. Verna attended a rural school across the road from their house. She attended Mayville College in 1940, then taught for two years in rural schools in Pembina and Walsh Counties. In 1944 she was hired to teach in Grandin, North Dakota.

Lorraine M. Cox
Lorraine Marion Cox, 91, Fargo, ND passed away on Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Sanford Palliative Care surrounded by her family. She was born on January 18, 1923 to Frank and Matilda (Bitzan) Kuhn in Enderlin, ND where she grew up and graduated from Enderlin High school. Following graduation, she had several secretarial jobs.

On September 7, 1943 she was united in marriage to Frederic Cox in Enderlin, ND. They lived in Superior, WI before they moved to Fargo where they opened Grandma’s Bakery. In 1946, the couple started Freddy’s Lefse, which is still run by the family.

Neighbors: American Airlines captain got his start in Minn, ND
Bill Kuebler has really been around, literally. He’s a captain for American Airlines. But he got his start in Moorhead, where he was born, and in Fargo, where he grew up. A month after he graduated from high school, Bill enrolled at the Air Force Academy. He graduated in 1979, and then was on active duty with the Air Force flying T-38s and F-4 Phantoms until 1987. He joined American Airlines in 1988.

North Dakota tutors gave Teddy Roosevelt 'most important education'
In a 1910 speech, former President Theodore Roosevelt claimed that the time he spent living in a ranch house in Dakota Territory was “the most important educational asset of all my life.” His primary tutors were William Merrifield, and Joe and Sylvane Ferris. Through them, Roosevelt learned the importance of preservation, how to run a large business operation, quickly ascertain a person’s character and survive under the most challenging circumstances. Roosevelt arrived in Medora on June 9, 1884. He was pleased with Sylvane and Merrifield, who managed his herd of 300 cattle at the Maltese Cross Ranch.

Paul Sornsin
Paul Sornsin, age 57, passed away on Saturday, January 25, 2014, at home in Grand Junction, CO from complications associated with dementia. He was surrounded by immediate family, friends and assisted by HopeWest Hospice.

Paul was born in Fargo, North Dakota, the son of Roland and Barbara Sornsin. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson in 1977 and worked 26 years at the Developmental Work Activity Center (DWAC) until his retirement in the spring of 2003.

Marian (Merhiy) Shoemaker
Marian (Merhiy) Shoemaker was born in Fargo, ND on Sept. 17, 1917 to Hassen and Elizabeth (Milker) Merhiy. In May of 1922 following the death of their parents, Marian and her four older siblings were sent to the Wild Rice Children’s Home east of Twin Valley, MN. Marian was raised in orphanage care until nearing the age of 16 at which time she went to CA to live with her great-uncle Frank Miller. She held various jobs including employment at a shoe factory and a hospital. On June 23, 1940 she married Albert Shoemaker. They made their home in Los Angeles and later moved to Santa Rosa, CA. In 1943 they adopted a five-day old baby, Robert. They enjoyed fishing, camping, playing cards and dancing. In later years they drove their El Camino with topper around the US. They also took trips to Alaska, Hawaii, and Australia. In 2004 Marian was moved to River Hills, Cambridge, MN to be closer to family. In 2006 she moved to St. Mary’s Lincoln Park Assisted Living, Detroit Lakes, MN. In Dec. 2007 she became a resident of St. Mary’s Oak Crossing Cedar Ridge where she lived at the time of her death. Marian will be remembered for her meticulous organizational skills, her love for adventure, and her care and compassion for family and friends. She will be missed by nieces and nephews, Nancy (Harold) Ebens, Jane (Tim) Miller, Dean (Cathy) Merhiy, Linda (Frank) Seaberg, Lawrence Merhiy, and Elizabeth Rubio. Marian was preceded in death by her parents, husband, Al; son, Robert; brothers, Joe, Ali, and Smylie; and sister, Evelyn Merhiy.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mary’s Essentia Health Chapel, Detroit Lakes, on Wednesday, April 23 at 2:30 p.m.

Steven J. Olson
Steven J. Olson, of Moorhead, MN, died in an unfortunate accident near Barnesville, MN on April 16, 2014. Steve was the only son of Robert and Sally Olson born October 28, 1970. He grew up on a farm north of Moorhead. He graduated from Moorhead Senior High where he met the love of his life, Angie. He married Angie Walker at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church in Moorhead on August 18, 1990. Steve was a loving and devoted father to Johnathan, Shelby and Tristan. They lived in Glyndon, MN for years before moving back to Moorhead, near his childhood farm. Steve drove semi for Cass Clay Creamery of Fargo, ND for the past 16 years. He farmed with his father, Sonny Olson, on the farm where Steve grew up. Steve enjoyed spending time outdoors, hunting, three wheeling with friends, riding his Harley Motorcycle, and most of all spending time with his loving wife, Angie and their children. Steve will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Steve is survived by his wife, Angie; son, Johnathan; daughters, Shelby and Tristan; parents, Robert and Sally Olson; sisters, Tammy (Tom) Stoffel, Sandra Olson, Tracy Olson, Melanie Olson; mother-in-law, Diane Anderson; brothers-in-law, Steve, Glenn (Teresa), and Bryan (Jill) Walker; sister-in-law, Teresa Gemar; and many uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces and friends.
