Lloyd A. Svendsbye
Svendsbye, Lloyd A. age 83 of Hamlet, ND, passed away on March 2, 2014 at the Colony in Eden Prairie, where he resided for the past 3 years. Preceded in death by his beloved wife, Anne; parents, Anders and Gudrun Svendsbye; sisters, Alice Vatne, Margaret Vatne, Lillian Nelson, Gladys Berg; brother, Albert Svendsbye. Survived by brother, Edward Svendsbye; sisters, Adeline Elverud, Jean Brusven; nieces, nephews and many friends. Lloyd was a 1951 graduate of Concordia College in Moorhead, MN. Following college he went on to Luther Seminary and was ordained a Lutheran Minister in 1955. He received his Doctorate of Divinity from Columbia University in New York. He taught religion at Concordia and was department chair. Throughout his career Lloyd served as President of Augsburg Publishing House, Mpls, MN, Vice President of American Lutheran Church, Mpls, MN, President of Luther/Northwestern Seminary, St. Paul, MN, Vice President and Dean of the Faculty at St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN, and President of Augustana College, Sioux Falls, SD. Following Lloyd’s retirement he served on the Board of Directors for various institutions. Throughout his life Lloyd was very proud of his Norwegian heritage, participating in Mindekirken, Torske Klubben and Norway House. Lloyd was also extremely proud that he had a personal audience with Pope John Paul II and hosted such dignitaries as King Olaf of Norway and President Gorbachev. Even though Lloyd had a very successful professional career he took great pleasure in being a very simple North Dakota farm boy. Visitation 5-7 PM Thursday, March 13, Washburn-McReavy Edina Chapel, W. 50th St and Vernon Ave at Hwy 100, Edina. Funeral service 11 AM Friday, March 14 with visitation beginning at 10 AM at Normandale Lutheran Church, 6100 Normandale Road, Edina. Interment Lakewood Cemetery. Another try at Sunday liquor sales could start with ‘baby step’
ST. PAUL – Allowing liquor stores to open on Sundays remains a steep climb in the Minnesota Legislature, so its prime proponent is willing to accept “baby steps.” Sen. Roger Reinert, D-Duluth, has introduced seven bills that to varying degrees allow Sunday sales, including some that make minor changes in existing state law that bans liquor store sales.

Dayton would keep surplus spending to $162 million
ST. PAUL – A $1.2 billion budget surplus does not mean massive new state spending. Gov. Mark Dayton made that clear Thursday when he unveiled his plan for election-year budget changes: About half of the projected surplus would go to tax cuts, $162 million would be spent on what he called “essential” needs and the rest would go into the state budget reserve.
