Letter: ND senators’ vote was shortsighted
Desmond Tutu speaks of one of the sayings in South Africa as being “Ubuntu.” According to Tutu, this is the essence of being human. It speaks to the fact of our interconnectedness and that you can’t be human all by yourself when we have this quality – and when you do, you are known for your generosity.

Vote on guns puts Heitkamp in national political spotlight
WASHINGTON – As Heidi Heitkamp eked out a North Dakota Senate race decided by less than 3,000 votes last year, one topic that rarely came up was gun rights. Now that Heitkamp is a freshman senator in Washington, an issue that once hardly registered has quickly become a defining one.

Editorial: Not much courage in Senate
Profiles in courage among politicians are notable because they are rare. North Dakota’s first-term senators, both of whom enjoy deep wells of popularity, were less than courageous last week when they voted against a baby step toward sensible background checks for most gun purchases. Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D, and Sen. John Hoeven, R, are on the wrong side of history on this issue.

Letter: Heitkamp bows to the gun lobby
Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., shame on you for bowing to the gun lobby/NRA and voting against the bipartisan gun safety bill in the Senate. I realize that Sen. John Hoeven, R-N.D., also voted against the bill, but your vote hurts me more. I trusted YOU with my Democratic vote.

Letter: Don’t expect a second term
I can’t say that I expected much from Sen. Heidi Heitkamp, D-N.D., in her term; it was better than the alternative. But even I wouldn’t have believed that it could have ended even before it began. She is the most lame excuse for a politician who is mostly interested in her own career advancement than anything else I have seen in Democratic circles.

Letter: Wrong votes by our senators
Has government of, by and for the people perished from the earth? The support for universal background checks for gun purchasers is somewhere north of 80 percent. Even the National Rifle Association supported the idea, until they opposed it.
