Steven Wesley Saum
Steve was born on July 26 1961 in Canby, MN to Estle and Shirley Saum. His family moved to the country when he was a small boy and he spent great deal of time exploring the woods, swimming in the creek, and developing a love for the outdoors and for hunting. He excelled in sports in high school and graduated from Canby High School in 1979. He went on to play football at the University of Minnesota Morris and graduated in 1983 with a degree in English Literature. He spent the next 12 years working with adults with developmental disabilities in various capacities throughout Minnesota. In 1996 Steve earned an MS in counseling and human development at Minnesota State University Moorhead. While he was working on his PhD in Clinical Psychology, he worked as a counselor at the Village Family Service Center and Southeast Human Service Center. He received his PhD from the Fielding Graduate University, Santa Barbara, in 2006. Steve spent most of his professional career focusing on work with Adult Sex Offenders as well as Domestic Violence perpetrators. He provided program direction for the ND State Hospital Sex Offender Treatment Program and was clinical supervisor at The Village. He also worked at Solutions Behavioral Health Care Professionals, Benson Psychological Services, and was an adjunct professor at Jamestown College. In addition he served on numerous professional committees, including the Governor’s Task Force on sex offender treatment and did a great deal of public speaking on a variety of mental health care topics.
Steve had a long standing love of the outdoors, including hunting and fishing, which was shared with family members and friends. He enjoyed gardening, canning, and cooking and attempting to learn the art of Bonsai. He was known for being able to take whatever ingredients he had available to him to create an outstanding dish. Steve liked to read, play guitar, do crossword puzzles, and engage in a lively conversation.
